DAY 7
THIS WAS NEVER JUST A CONFERENCE!

Seven days ago, we started with a question, Why did SHE FARMS have to happen?

Today, I think the answer is clearer.

Because women are already farming,

-Already producing.

-Already feeding families.

-Already participating in markets.

-Already building businesses.

-Already carrying a huge part of our agricultural economy.

But many are still trying to build those businesses without enough access to the knowledge, networks, mentorship, finance, markets and systems they need to thrive.

So yes...We needed a conference!

We needed a room where women farmers could see one another, we needed those conversations,we needed those stories, we needed a panel where difficult questions could be asked, we needed financial institutions, policymakers, development partners, farmer organisations and farmers around the same table.

And we also needed networking, collaboration and most importantly we needed to celebrate women farmers.

At the same time we need more than a conference!
-We need continued conversations.

-We need stronger networks.

-We need practical knowledge.

-We need better access to opportunities.

-We need farmers who see their farms as enterprises.

-We need institutions that understand the realities of farmers.

-We need an ecosystem that enables women to move from survival to sustainability.

And most importantly...
❗️We need women farmers to believe that what they are building is worth building well.

The SHE FARMS Conference was created with the aim of celebrating women farmers, strengthening their networks, sharing knowledge and experiences, and supporting the transition from subsistence farming toward commercially viable and resilient agricultural enterprises.

And that is why I don't want this to end with the conference.

-I want the conversations to continue.

-I want the connections to continue.

-I want the learning to continue.

-I want the stories of women farmers to continue being told.

Because perhaps the greatest thing we can do is create a future where a woman can say, “I am a farmer. And nobody asks, “Whose farm?”

They simply ask "How is your business doing?”

That is the future I want to see.

That is the future SHE FARMS is working towards.

And thi is only the beginning...

DAY 6
WE CANNOT BUILD ALONE!

One of the things I love about agriculture is that it teaches us that nothing grows in isolation. A seed needs the soil, the soil needs water, the farmer needs knowledge, the business needs a market and the farmer needs people.

-People to learn from.

-People to collaborate with.

-People to open doors.

-People to share opportunities with.

People to say, "I have been there. Let me help you.”

This is why collaboration was such an important part of SHE FARMS.

The conference wasn't only about listening to speakers.

It was also about meeting people, sharing stories,building relationships, finding potential partners, learning from other women and creating networks.

And reminding ourselves that we don't have to figure everything out alone.

Our programme deliberately included team building, networking and a conversation around collaborative measures because collective action can be an important part of building sustainable farm enterprises.

And there is something else I hope we take away from this, COLLABORATION does not mean losing your individuality. It means recognising that sometimes your strength can solve my problem and my strength can solve yours.

-Farmer organisations can strengthen bargaining power.

-Networks can open markets.

-Mentorship can shorten the learning curve.

-Partnerships can unlock opportunities.

And women supporting women can create something much bigger than any one of us could build alone. So perhaps the question isn't only “how do I grow my farm?” Perhaps we should also ask, "who am I building with?”

And I want to end this series with the question I have been carrying since we started:

Was SHE FARMS just a conference?

I don't think so.

DAY 5
SO, WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY TAKE TO BUILD A PROFITABLE FARM?

Yesterday, we talked about the panel.

Today, let's take those questions a little further.

Because when we say, “We want farmers to build profitable enterprises, ”what exactly do we mean?

That simply means a farmer should be able to think beyond production.

1. THINK ABOUT FINANCE
How do I access financing that makes sense for my agricultural business?

2. THINK ABOUT MARKETS
Who is my customer, and how do I reach them consistently?

3. THINK ABOUT VALUE ADDITION
Can I earn more by doing more with what I produce?

4.THINK ABOUT BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
Do I actually know my costs, revenue, margins and cash flow

5. WHAT DOES THE POLICY SAY?
Are government support mechanisms helping farmers move toward commercialisation?

6. THINK ABOUT TAX & COMPLIANCE
What does it take to grow while remaining compliant?

7. THINK ABOUT NETWORKS
Who can help me access knowledge, markets and opportunities?

8. THINK ABOUT RISK
What happens when production fails, prices change or markets disappear?

NB: These are not separate issues, they are connected.

E.g a) A farmer may have excellent production skills but struggle because there is no market.

b) Another may have a market but no working capital.

c) Another may have funding but weak business systems.

d) Another may have a great business but no network.

That is why building sustainable farm enterprises requires an ECOSYSTEM not just one intervention.

The SHE FARMS panel was designed to explore exactly these kinds of issues from finance and market linkages to business management, value addition, policy, compliance and farmer organisations.

And perhaps this is the lesson, a profitable farm is not built by production alone! It is built by understanding the business around the production.

Tomorrow, let's talk about something that was just as important as the business conversations:

DAY 4
THE CONVERSATION THAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN!

Imagine putting people from different parts of the agricultural ecosystem around one table and asking:

What will it take for farmers, especially women farmers to build sustainable and profitable agricultural enterprises?

That was the heart of our multi-stakeholder panel discussion at SHE FARMS under the theme Strategic Agriculture: Building Sustainable and Profitable Enterprises.

And we deliberately wanted different voices around that table.

-Policy.

-Financial institutions.

-Farmer organisations.

-Development partners.

-Experienced farmers.

Because the challenges facing farmers cannot be solved by one institution alone.

We wanted to ask the difficult questions.

1. Lesotho PostBank was asked....."Access to Finance remains a challenge for many farmers. What practical steps can women farmers take to improve their chances of accessing funding and investment opportunities? And as a follow up Lesotho PostBank was asked about the current opportunities available to help farmers! (Let us unpack these opportunities at the end of this 7 days series☺️)

2.Professor Pulane Nkhabutlane answered "How important are innovation, technology and continuos learning in building competitive agricultural enterprises, and where should farmrrs start?

3. GIZ Lesotho - Mrs. Motselisi Ratii, on the other hand answered "If you could recommend one policy , programme or institutional change that would significantly accelerate the growth of women-led enterprises in Lesotho , what would it be?

4. Mr. Moferefere Makutlu was asked " Many farmers operate informally. What are the benefits of business formalisation, and why is it important for farmers seeking opportunities , financing and market access?

5. Ms. Thakane Mahase answered what is the single most important shift a farmer must take to begin building a sustainable enterprise taking into consideration that many farmers remain trapped in a cycle of survival?

6. From a legal perspective, Adv. 'Mamokuena Rasebonang of RALERA Legal answered a question on "What should farmers know about contracts with buyers, suppliers , employees, and business partners , and what common mistakes should they avoid. "

7. Dr. Moipone Letsie, representing Farm Girls answered a crucial question on women often juggling farming, family responsibilities and community obligations and how can such women balance these responsibilities while still growing succesful enterprises?

8. Mrs. Malefu Ntholeng answered a very important question that is often missed which is a question on the importance of proper record keeping and cash flow management in building a fundable and bankable enterprises!

9. Agrivision Lesotho answered "what role do partnerships , training and support institutions play in helping farmers transition from subsistence production to commercially viable enterprises?

These are not small questions because if we genuinely want women farmers to move from survival to sustainable enterprises, we cannot simply tell them, “Work harder"!

We have to ask whether the ecosystem around them is working!

That is why this conversation mattered. And perhaps the most important question is one we should continue asking long after the conference:

"What would change if the entire agricultural ecosystem worked together to help a woman farmer build a profitable enterprise?"

I think that is a conversation worth continuing.

Tomorrow, let's unpack some of the BIG issues behind that conversation.

DAY 3

FROM SURVIVAL TO SUSTAINABLE FARM ENTERPRISE

Let's be honest.

There is a huge difference between having a farm and running a farm enterprise.

A survival farmer asks how much can I produce, while an enterprise-minded farmer asks who is going to buy it?

A survival farmer thinks about today's production while an enterprise-minded farmer thinks about;
costs, cash flow, markets, profitability, risk, growth, systems, and the future.

That mindset shift was at the heart of SHE FARMS.

One of the specific objectives of the conference was to shift the prevailing survival mindset in farming towards a long-term sustainability and growth mindset because sustainable farming is not simply about producing more.

It is about building something that works, something that can withstand challenges, something that can create value, something that can grow, something that can create opportunities for others, something that doesn't collapse when one bad season comes....

And perhaps most importantly, Something that can outlive the person who started it!

That means we have to start thinking differently about what a farm is.

-A farm is not only land.

-It is not only crops.

-It is not only livestock.

-It is not only production.

-A farm can be an enterprise.

And when women begin seeing their farms this way, the questions change....

-The decisions change.

-The way we manage money changes.

-The way we approach markets changes.

-The way we plan for growth changes.

-And eventually...the results can change.

This is the shift SHE FARMS wants to encourage.

From surviving on the farm... to building sustainable enterprises from the farm.

Tomorrow, we get to the conversation that, for me, was one of the most important parts of SHE FARMS:

THE PANEL DISCUSSIONS!

And the questions were BIG......
