Thirteen prolonged Pre-trial Detainees were released at the Kakata and Gbarnga Magisterial Courts on Friday May 10, 2019. Lawyers from the Center for Legal Education, Human Rights & Peace Studies(CLEPHS) relying on the Constitution of Liberia, The Criminal Procedure Law and human rights instruments led the initiative for the release of the pre-trial detainees. Majority of the pre-trial detainees were languishing behind bars for petit offenses, failure of the state to charge beyond the statutory period, lack of legal counsel(public defender), etc. CLEPHS also held counseling and community reintegration sessions with the pre-trial detainees for smooth transition in their respective communities.
