World Cup 2026 Golden Boot race: Messi, Mbappe, Haaland & Vinicius in epic battle to be top scorer
4 hours ago / autty
Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Vinicius Junior have kept up the pace in what is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested World Cup Golden Boot battles in memory.

The superstars are delivering on the biggest stage of them all and are setting a blistering pace in the race to be the 2026 tournament's top goalscorer.

Messi heads the field with five goals from two games after his double against Austria secured Argentina a 2-0 victory.

Mbappe, Haaland and Vinicius Junior are just behind Messi with four goals after doubles of their own in respective wins for France, Norway and Brazil.

Not among them as yet, however, is Harry Kane, who took home the gong in 2018, after England's 0-0 stalemate with Ghana on Tuesday.

The Bayern striker had few chances in Boston, but should have scored late on when he uncharacteristically blazed over from close range when unmarked.

How the race for the Golden Boot stands...
Will anyone else join the party?

The big question is: will anyone else gatecrash the Golden Boot party?

Kane scored twice against Croatia before his Ghana blank and like Mbappe, the England captain, whose overall World Cup goal tally stands at 10, has the chance to become the first striker to win multiple Golden Boots.

Spain's Lamine Yamal [one goal] got his tournament up and running with a goal against Saudi Arabia, while Cristiano Ronaldo is off the mark with a double against Uzbekistan.

Mikel Oyarzabal was the scorer of the winning goal for Spain in the Euro 2024 final and the Real Sociedad forward has made a fast start with two goals in his country's thrashing of Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, Deniz Undav was a rank outsider before the finals kicked off, but the Stuttgart forward already has three goals and could be a surprise contender if Germany go far. Netherland's Cody Gakpo [two] also has a good scoring record at

Real Madrid won't sell Valverde; Camavinga and Tchouameni available

According to AS, Real Madrid still trusts Valverde

The Uruguayan midfielder has endured a season of underperformance and a conflict with Tchouameni, but with the club's backing, he faces a challenging campaign ahead: Mourinho's arrival will intensify competition in Real Madrid's midfield.

Real Madrid aims to turn things around after two consecutive trophyless seasons, and significant changes could be made across the board. The first step is bringing back Mourinho, followed by strengthening key positions through the transfer market: Cucurella, Konate, and Bernardo Silva have already arrived, and Denzel Dumfries is awaiting official confirmation after Inter Milan agreed to a deal worth approximately €20 million.

To finance these signings, Real Madrid is willing to sell midfielders, with Camavinga and Tchouameni being the primary candidates. Valverde is also highly sought after by English clubs, but he is not for sale. Real Madrid has maintained its confidence in him; in fact, despite last season's competitive struggles and personal difficulties, the club continues to support him. For Valverde, last season ended badly following his altercation with Tchouameni, in which he came off worse and was hospitalized.

Real Madrid considers the matter closed. The club views Valverde as a key player for its future and is not considering selling him. He will retain an important role, though he is aware that last season's performances have somewhat eroded the trust of fans and, to an extent, the club itself. Following Xavi Alonso's departure, Valverde was among those mentioned as a possible departure, having voiced disagreements with the coach at times, particularly regarding his deployment at right-back. Bernabéu supporters also expressed their frustration with continuous boos during the match against Levante.

Valverde has long stated his ambition to be a "benchmark figure" for Real Madr

Arsenal ready to step up interest in Rogers - with Rice leading charm offensive
48 mins ago / autty
Arsenal are planning to step up their interest in Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and are using their England contingent to help convince him of the move.

Villa need to sell this summer to stay within financial guidelines but have been insisting that Rogers is one player who must stay and are in a strong negotiating position owing to his contract.

Arsenal and Chelsea sources believe Villa may be willing to talk at around £85million, but Unai Emery’s club are well aware of the escalating prices for midfielders in the current market.

Middlesbrough also hold a 20 per cent sell-on clause, which has to be factored into any bidding.

While Villa have qualified for the Champions League, Rogers is understood to be open to listening to what Premier League champions Arsenal have to offer.

The Gunners’ midfielder Declan Rice has been working away on Rogers, hoping to help influence his decision, with team-mates Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze also in the camp. Rogers is seen as an upgrade by manager Mikel Arteta, who likes the fact he would bring further versatility to their frontline.

Arsenal are looking to add around four or five quality signings this summer.

Rogers is viewed as a priority, but they also want a striker, with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez admired.

They have been offered the chance to sign Christos Tzolis from Bruges but have spoken to other wingers too. They also admire Alex Scott at Bournemouth and want another defender.

Scott is valued at £80million, though Bournemouth are trying to convince him to sign a new deal, with the prospect of a release clause being inserted into that contract.

Arsenal could sell £20million-rated Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard, who has interest from Bournemouth, and Gabriel Martinelli. There is also interest in Ethan Nwaneri, Christian Norgaard and Piero Hincapie as Arteta ponders how best to improve his squad.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT:
In response to the information that has appeared in various media outlets regarding a supposed interest of our club in Bayern Munich player Michael Olise, Real Madrid C.F. wishes to state that it has not maintained any direct or indirect contact with the aforementioned footballer, his representatives, or individuals in his circle.

Real Madrid also wishes to highlight the excellent institutional relationship it maintains with Bayern Munich, with whom it shares a long history of mutual respect, collaboration, and admiration, and regrets the spread of speculation that does not correspond to reality.

Both clubs have always maintained a relationship based on trust and mutual respect, which is reflected, among other aspects, in the shared conviction that any eventual interest in a player belonging to the other club must be first addressed between the entities themselves, in accordance with the principles of institutional loyalty that have historically governed the relationship between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Portuguese Pundit: Ronaldo Should Remain a Starter; Only João Neves Excelled

According to SIC Notícias, some Portuguese commentators believe that Ronaldo should continue to start for the national team.

Following Portugal's 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo, both the team's performance and Ronaldo's came under heavy criticism. However, commentator João Rosado argued, "Portugal cannot blame everything on Ronaldo."

The Portuguese national team drew 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday in a match that failed to excite supporters. After the game, international media heavily criticized Portugal's display and their number 7, Ronaldo. The Independent even published an article titled "Ten Men and a Statue: Portugal Sacrifices the FIFA World Cup Again for Ronaldo's Ego."

Rosado said, "This headline is interesting," but it misses what actually happened on the pitch. "I think the headline has it backwards. I remember there were almost 10 statues, but only one person, João Neves, performed exceptionally well," said the SIC commentator.

"The Portuguese team is performing poorly, and Ronaldo is well below his usual standard, so the 41-year-old forward cannot be held solely responsible."

When asked about Roberto Martínez's possible lineup for the next match against Uzbekistan, Rosado opposed benching the captain.

The commentator believes that "Ronaldo should continue to play," and suggested that "one change could involve the right wing, where Francisco Conceição might feature."

Rosado also noted that "besides Ronaldo, there are many others with hidden egos," questioning the performance of other attacking players in the squad.

Portugal's World Cup civil war: Cristiano Ronaldo's sister backs attack on Bruno Fernandes
an hour ago / autty
Cristiano Ronaldo's sister has liked an Instagram post attacking Bruno Fernandes - igniting reports of tension in the Portuguese camp after their drab 1-1 draw with DR Congo on Wednesday.

Having boarded their plane to the United States as one of the favourites, Portugal got their World Cup campaign off to a dismal start in Houston.

Joao Neves put Roberto Martinez's side 1-0 up early on with an impressive header but, on the brink of half-time, the African nation struck back through Yoan Wissa.

And that would be how the tie would end, despite Portugal sitting some 37 places above Congo in FIFA's world rankings.

Backlash to the result in Portugal has been unsurprisingly rife, with calls growing for Ronaldo to be dropped after the ex-Man United star failed to register a single shot on target in Texas.

But now, in a dramatic turn of events, Ronaldo's sister appears to have thrown her support behind an attack on Red Devils captain Fernandes.

The 41-year-old's elder sibling Katia Aveiro liked an Instagram post by a Brazilian page accusing Fernandes of performing for United, but failing to turn up in a Portuguese shirt.

The account also compared the United captain to Barcelona winger Raphinha, whose poor form for Brazil has brought him a wave of criticism this week.

However, Ronaldo has bore the brunt of the backlash after appearing a shadow of his former self during the clash.

The Al Nassr forward registered just 25 touches against Congo and failed to fashion a single clear-cut chance - yet, still, was not substituted.

With 83 minutes on the clock and Portugal in desperate need of a goal, Martinez instead opted to replace Champions League-winning midfielder Vitinha with Goncalo Ramos.

The move was blasted by ex-England forward Chris Sutton as 'embarrassing' on BBC Radio 5 Live.

'He (Martinez) is scared to take him off. He is not the manager.

Ronaldo criticized after opener, his sister hits back: It's always easy to talk from the sidelines

2 hours ago / autty

Portugal drew 1-1 with DR Congo in their first FIFA World Cup match. Ronaldo, aged 41, started and played the full game but delivered a mediocre performance, drawing criticism after the match. In response, Ronaldo's sisters took to social media to defend him.

Ronaldo's eldest sister, Elma Aveiro, wrote: "I know beginnings are always tough, but the end will be good. After all, it's you (the players) who are fighting on the field. It's always easy to talk from the sidelines. And having victory snatched away like this really hurts."

Meanwhile, Ronaldo's second sister, Katia Aveiro, criticized some of the national team players: "It's baffling, they seem to have forgotten how to pass, how to tackle, how to launch counter-attacks. The entire team's offensive and defensive rhythm was backtracking from midfield. This FIFA World Cup is too strange, too strange. But it's okay, a bad start will lead to a perfect ending. We will fight to the end."
