Australia Student Visa Update

Australia has introduced new rules for international students, while the Opposition has announced plans that could change post-study work options.

📌 Key updates include:
✅ IN FORCE: Most international students can no longer bring partners and children. Exemptions apply only to PhD students and students from Pacific and ASEAN countries.
✅ IN FORCE: A second student visa now requires moving up a qualification level (e.g. Diploma to Bachelor).
✅ IN FORCE: Working Holiday visa holders can no longer apply for a student visa onshore.
✅ IN FORCE: The Temporary Graduate Visa (485) fee has risen to A$5,750, and the maximum age is now 35.
⚠️ PROPOSED: The Coalition plans to abolish the 485 visa and replace it with a post-study visa limited to PhD, health, education and regional university students.
⚠️ PROPOSED: Second and later temporary visa applications would need to be made offshore.

These changes show why choosing the right course, university and visa pathway from the start matters more than ever.

Australia Migration Update

Australia’s bridging visa backlog has reached record levels, and a former senior immigration official says proposed plans to cut it sharply may not add up.

📌 Key updates include:
✅ The number of people on bridging visas in Australia is at a record high.
✅ Students make up around 25% of the bridging visa backlog, followed by partner and parent applicants (around 20%).
✅ Onshore student visa refusals are rising, with many cases moving to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART).
✅ Limits on onshore student and temporary graduate visa applications are being proposed by major parties.
✅ Skilled permanent and skilled temporary visas continue to have very high approval rates.
✅ Partner and parent visa applicants may face long waiting periods due to limited places.

These developments show why a well-prepared application and the right visa pathway from the start matter more than ever.
