Anti-Money Laundering (AML) training organized by BAKC aims to strengthen the ability of professionals to detect, prevent, and report suspicious financial activities related to money laundering and terrorism financing. In recent years, Cambodia has expanded its AML framework to include certain non-financial professions, including lawyers.
Under Cambodian law and regulations issued by the Cambodia Financial Intelligence Unit, lawyers may be considered “reporting entities” when they engage in specific financial or transactional activities on behalf of their clients. These activities can include:
- Buying or selling real estate for clients
- Managing client money, securities, or other assets
- Managing bank accounts or business entities
- Creating, operating, or managing companies or legal arrangements
During AML training, lawyers are typically educated on several key responsibilities:
+Customer Due Diligence (CDD)
Lawyers must verify the identity of their clients and understand the nature of the client’s business and transactions.
+Suspicious Transaction Reporting (STR)
If a lawyer suspects that a transaction may involve money laundering or terrorism financing, they may be required to submit a report to the Cambodia Financial Intelligence Unit.
+Record Keeping
Legal professionals must maintain proper records of client identification and transactions for a specified period.
+Risk Awareness and Compliance
AML training helps lawyers understand risk indicators, compliance obligations, and penalties for non-compliance under Cambodian law.
