Immigration matters in Kenya are governed by the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government under the Directorate of Immigration Services.
Depending on the circumstances, there are multiple application classes and elaborate documentation is often required to support the application. This process can be cumbersome and time-consuming. To support clients:-
Work Permits
1. Class A Work Permit (prospecting and mining) - This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage,whether alone or in partnership, in prospecting for minerals or mining;
2. Class B Work Permit (agriculture and animal husbandry) - This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in the business of agriculture or animal husbandry in Kenya;
3. Class C Work Permit (prescribed profession) - This permit is issued to a person who is a member of a prescribed profession who intends to practise that profession, whether alone or in partnership, in Kenya;
4. Class D Work Permit (employment) - This permit is issued to a person who is offered specific employment by a specific employer, the Government of Kenya or any other person or authority under the control of the or an approved technical aid scheme under the United Nations Organisation or some other approved Agency (not
being an exempted person under section 34 (3), who has skills or qualifications that are not available in Kenya and whose engagement in that employment will be of benefit to Kenya);
5. Class F Work Permit (specific manufacturing) - This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage,whether alone or in partnership, in a specific manufacturing activity;
6. Class G Work Permit (investors and specific trade/business) - This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in a specific trade, business, consultancy or profession (other than a prescribed profession covered in 3 above);
7. Class I Work Permit (approved religious or charitable activities) - This permit is issued to a person who is a member of an institution registered under the Society’s Act who is engaged as a missionary, Member of a company limited by guarantee, Member of a trust registered under the Trustees Act and is approved by the Government of Kenya, and whose presence in Kenya will be of benefit to Kenya;
8. Class K Work Permit (ordinary residents) - This permit is issued to a person who is not less than thirty-five years of age; and has in his own right and at his full and free disposition an assured annual income of not less than the prescribed amount that is derived from sources other than any such employment, occupation, trade,
business or profession; and
9. Class M Work Permit (Refugees) - This permit is issued to a person who has been granted refugee status in
Kenya as per the Kenya Citizenship & Immigration Act 2011 and any spouse of such a refugee who intends to take up employment or engage in a specific occupation, trade, business or profession.
After issuance of the Work Permit, the permit holder will be required to apply for a Foreigner’s Certificate to act as an identification card for the duration of the Work Permit.

Other Immigration Services
A) Special Pass - This is a document issued to person(s) wishing to enter Kenya to temporarily conduct any
business, trade or profession or to apply for a permit or a pass.
It is usually limited to a period of three (3) months and can only be renewed once for a similar period.
B) Dependant Pass - This document is issued to person(s) who are dependants of Kenya Citizens, permit holders,
exempted persons or permanent residents in Kenya.
C) Re-Entry Pass - This document is issued to holders of dependant’s passes.
D) Student’s pass - This is a document issued to applicants (foreign students) who wish to pursue their education
in Kenya’s Education or Training Institutions where they have been accepted or admitted.
E) Internship Pass - This is a document issued to person(s) seeking to enter and remain in Kenya to
undertake an internship or academic research within Kenya. The applicant must be accepted as an intern
or researcher in an institution within Kenya.
F) Foreign National certificate - This is a document issued to all foreigners resident within Kenya for a period
exceeding 90 days who are above the age of 18 years.
G) Permanent Residence - This is a document issued to ex-citizen in Kenya who had renounced or lost citizenship;
holders of work permits for at least 7 years and resident in Kenya for a continuous 3 years; children of Kenya
citizens born outside the country; and spouses of Kenyan citizens married for at least three years.
