We had the privilege of spending the day with the incredible students at St. Maria Goretti Rombo Girls Secondary School in Loitoktok as we expanded our water and sanitation initiative. It was inspiring to learn from them and see firsthand how our support is making an impact. As their school grows, so does the need for reliable access to water and private, safe hygiene facilities. Through the IKM Foundation, we've addressed this by constructing hygiene facilities and drilling a borehole. Beyond health and education, these efforts also contribute to sustaining local biodiversity by reducing reliance on natural water sources. We are grateful to be part of this journey with such an inspiring community.

We are thrilled to welcome our fourth cohort of Head Start, Kenya Scholars! They recently joined us for the third edition of the annual Head Start Academy, a two-week adventure bootcamp designed to empower them to harness their potential.

Head Start is more than just an academy—it’s a comprehensive five-year programme that supports students from low-income and marginalised backgrounds in accessing education and professional development opportunities that are often out of reach. The Academy is just the beginning, setting the stage for a transformative journey. Over the next five years, our Scholars will receive ongoing mentorship, leadership development training, networking opportunities, and financial support to ensure their success. We are excited to support them every step of the way on this incredible journey.

Our team brought their A-game to this year’s Sports Day, showcasing their dedication not only to fitness and health but also to the core values that drive our success. It was more than just a day of friendly competition. It was about coming together to celebrate teamwork, camaraderie, and the power of working together.

With all the energy on display, you could almost be forgiven for thinking you’d accidentally stumbled into the recently concluded Paris Olympics-minus the Eiffel Tower, of course!

At IKM, we believe that a healthy lifestyle is the foundation of a thriving workplace. Our commitment to promoting the well-being of our people is reflected in every step we take, whether it's on the field or in the workplace. As Helen Keller wisely said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." This event was a testament to the power of collaboration and the incredible things we can achieve when we work as one.

Here’s to building a healthier, stronger, and more connected team!

Today, on World Refugee Day, we celebrate the resilience and determination of refugees worldwide. We're honoured to share the story of one of our scholars, Clementine whose journey embodies the spirit of perseverance.

"Muhammad Ali once said, 'Impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion.' In a world full of adversities, it is imperative that we stay positive and strive to make good use of every opportunity given to us," she reflects.

As the eldest of four children born to Rwandan refugee parents who sought asylum in Kenya, her path has been marked by challenges. Her parents worked tirelessly to provide for their needs and ensure access to education, often seeking assistance from refugee support organisations.

Despite the odds, she has thrived. Now, as a recipient of our university education scholarship through the Head Start Africa, Kenya programme run by DLA Piper and the IKM Foundation, she's charting a course for a brighter future.

"Having reached this far has been a blessing. I am grateful to DLA Piper and the IKM Foundation for financing my university education. I have completed my first year of a BSc in Information Technology, through the financial support and mentorship that I continue to receive under their Head Start Africa, programme. It has had an impact on my personal growth as an individual. I am thankful for their support and their investment in my future."

Her story reminds us that with the right support and opportunities, refugees can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and achieve their dreams.

This World Refugee Day, let us celebrate the strength and perseverance of all refugees around the world.

Happy Eid al-Adha to our clients and colleagues.

Our Senior Partner Kamau Karori SC participated as a panellist in the session titled "David vs Goliath? Contractual Disputes Involving States - Experience from Africa," hosted by Agnes Gitau of 3 Verulam Buildings and Duncan Bagshaw of Howard Kennedy LLP on Thursday last week during the London International Disputes Week.

He spoke alongside Madeline Kimei (MCIArb, FTIArb), Nania Owusu-Ankomah, FCIArb, Jane Davies Evans KC and Olabisi S Makanjuola. The panel discussed among others, lessons learnt from decisions made by arbitral tribunals on disputes emanating from or involving African states and the critical factors that investors must consider when making investments especially where land is involved. A key take away was that political support alone is not sufficient. Securing the buy-in and support of the host communities, along with undertaking proper due diligence so as to ensure full compliance with relevant laws and regulations of the host country are indispensable prerequisites.

The IKM Foundation Education Program aims to increase access to education for underprivileged students, by offering financial support towards their students' education. The program is committed to nurturing the holistic development of the students. We recently held a mentorship forum for our Form 1 and Form 3 students and their guardians, where they received guidance on personal growth, self-awareness and development of positive life skills. The mentorship forum was also an excellent opportunity for the students to create connections with other students in the program. They say that a photograph speaks a thousand words ... so here is a recap of our day in photographs.
