This is a reflection on what the justice system looks like in Kilifi for le***an, bis*xual and q***r womn.
For many LBQ persons in Kilifi, justice does not feel accessible.
It feels distant.
And sometimes, it feels unsafe.
Imagine experiencing violence and having to ask yourself: Will reporting this bring help... or more harm and retraumatization.
Our community shares that they are not taken seriously when they try to report cases .
Others say they are questioned in ways that feel judgmental, or blamed for what happened to them.
In some situations, fear becomes the biggest barrier.
Fear of stigma, fear of being outed and fear of retaliation from family, community, or even authorities.
But beyond these challenges, LBQ persons in Kilifi continue to support each other, create informal networks of care, speak, even when it is difficult and seek justice, even when the system makes it hard.
Justice should not depend on who you are or who you love.
A fair justice system must be safe, inclusive and accessible to everyone.
We must do better, as a community and as a system.
