Following recent news reports regarding the Japanese government's plan to strictly revise Permanent Residency (PR) criteria, here are the updated key points, including details on the expected annual income standard. Eligibility requirements will be tightened in phases starting this autumn.

Key Changes and Highlights:

Income Requirement & Expected Threshold (Targeted for October 2026)

Applicants will generally be required to continuously maintain an annual income that exceeds the average Japanese household income level.

While official exact numbers have not yet been specified by Immigration, public statistical data (e.g., Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare surveys) indicates that the average annual household income in Japan ranges between approximately 5.36 million and 5.75 million yen. Further details regarding how single households or dependents will be evaluated remain to be clarified.

Pension and Financial Assets (Targeted for April 2027)

Projected pension benefits must meet the equivalent of 30 years of enrollment in Employees' Pension Insurance (Kosei Nenkin). Any shortfall must be supported by verified financial assets.

Social Integration and Compliance

It's been raining for quite some time now, but it feels like the end of the rainy season is just around the corner. I'm really looking forward to some sunny days!

I visited the Nagoya Immigration Bureau today. When I passed through the glass doors at the main entrance, it actually seemed surprisingly quiet and less crowded than usual.

However, once I was inside the waiting area, there was still about a one-hour wait. Still, all things considered, it was a relatively smooth experience for Nagoya.

This visit was specifically to apply for a Spouse Visa for a client. The process went smoothly, and now we wait.

I've also been noticing some news regarding immigration fees recently, so I'm planning to put together a summary and share it with you all in a future post.
