🇯🇵 Japan’s Immigration Fees Will Increase from October 1, 2026

From October 1, fees will increase significantly, depending on the period of stay granted.

However, not everyone should rush to apply in September. Renewal applications can generally be submitted only around 3 months before the current period of stay expires, and the application should be properly prepared with all necessary documents and requirements confirmed.

The key point is: the application acceptance date, not the approval date, determines which fee applies.

If you are planning to renew or change your status of residence, now is a good time to check your eligibility and prepare your application carefully.

🇯🇵 Japan has tightened the screening process for naturalization (帰化).

The biggest change is that applicants are now, as a general rule, expected to have lived in Japan for 10 years or more and to demonstrate integration into Japanese society. The government has also expanded the period over which tax and social insurance payment records are checked.

Naturalization is becoming more strictly assessed. Applicants need a longer, more stable record of life in Japan.

If you're considering applying for Japanese citizenship, it is worth checking your residence history, taxes, social insurance, employment and overall circumstances carefully before applying.

🇯🇵 JAPAN IS MAKING THE BUSINESS MANAGER VISA HARDER

Japan has made the Business Manager Visa (経営・管理) much stricter since October 16, 2025.

If you are planning to start a business in Japan and get this visa, there are several important changes you should know.

❶. More money is required

The required business capital has increased from ¥5 million to ¥30 million.

That is a very big change.

A small company with ¥5 million in capital is no longer enough under the new rules.

❷. You need a full-time employee

The company must have at least one full-time employee who meets the immigration requirements (Citizenship or PR holder).

❸. Japanese language ability is important

The business manager or one qualifying full-time employee must have a certain level of Japanese ability.
The required level is around B2. Alternative can be JLPT N2 or higher degree.

❹. The manager needs real experience or education

The applicant must also show that they have the ability to manage a business.
• A relevant master's degree or higher, or
• At least 3 years of management experience.

❺. Having a company is not enough anymore
Now, immigration will look more carefully at the real business.

- Is the business actually operating?
- Does it have enough money?
- Does it have employees?
- Is the business plan realistic?
- Does the manager really have the ability to run the business?

🇯🇵 What about people who already have this visa?
Don't panic.

There is a 3-year transition period until October 16, 2028. Current Business Manager visa holders do not suddenly have to prepare ¥30 million immediately. However, this does not mean you should wait until 2028.

Your business situation, taxes, social insurance, employees, and future business plan can all become important when you renew your visa.

If you are worried, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Japan’s Immigration Management Is Entering a New Era

With Japan’s foreign resident population exceeding 4 million, the “Zero Illegal Stay” Plan and major increases in residence-related fees, Japan is moving toward a more systematic and rigorous approach to residency management.

Stricter rules do not necessarily mean fewer opportunities. For foreign residents who comply with the rules, long-term residency and permanent residence can provide a more stable foundation for life and career in Japan. For employers, proper residency management means lower compliance risks and more sustainable foreign employment.

The rising cost of residence procedures should be seen not only as a burden, but as an opportunity to rethink how we manage residency, employment, and long-term careers in Japan.
