Your pet can't speak for themselves. A Pet-Nup can.

And Jersey now has its first court case on pets in divorce.

The Royal Court recently published a case in which pet arrangements in a Jersey divorce came before the court. It's a significant moment and a sign that this issue is very much a real one here in Jersey.

It's not entirely surprising.

We've seen how English courts have approached this where the court looked past who owned a dog on paper and asked instead: who actually cared for it? Who walked it, fed it, and took it to the vet?

Because pets are legally treated as property here in Jersey, the outcome of a dispute isn't always straightforward (or fair).

The good news is there's something you can do now, before any of this ever becomes an issue.

It's called a Pet-Nup. It’s a simple agreement between couples that sets out what would happen to a pet if they ever parted ways.

In today’s Jersey Evening Post our partner Paul Scally is highlighting a critical issue facing Jersey's property industry with the number of conveyancers on the Island dropping from 60 in 2000 to just 37 today, and urgent action is needed.

As the market recovers, fewer conveyancers means longer delays and rising costs for buyers and sellers. That's why we're taking action and will soon be launching a structured training programme open to all Island firms.

Because a stronger industry is better for everyone, especially the public.
