I opened a house today that had been shut for over forty years.

Nothing had been touched. A kitchen in pale blue formica, cups still on the counter. A bed made, with a sacred image and a small crucifix above the headboard.

And in a cardboard box beside the bed, the magazines of those same years. The ones you would not have left on the kitchen table. I cannot show you those covers here, which is its own small piece of the story. They sat in a box in a grandmother's house in the Sixties without anyone blinking. Today a platform would take them down within the hour.

Next to them, a clipping someone had carefully cut out and kept. Nine puppies eating from nine bowls, under the headline Buon appetito, amici.

That is what stayed with me. Not the dust. The distance. A crucifix over the bed and, three metres away, a culture already changing faster than anyone in that room could see. Forty years later the house is still holding both, and neither one is embarrassed.

This is the eleventh one I am looking at, in the old town of Manduria, in Salento, Puglia.
