A stich in time, saves nine: The CEO of a start-up consulted me on a matter of data breach. This Company which deals with proprietary information in their line of business and is a start-up, had never paid much attention to details such as documentation, contracts etc. or bothered with legalities for obvious reasons. Legal advise is first reviwed only as a 'Cost to Company'.

Now with the breach which had occured due to an internal breach was exposing the Company to possibly millions worth of indemnity towards their client's against possible third party data privacy violation action.

As a business, one can no longer afford to leave the finer details to later or take callous chances no matter how bonafide the intentions or how good the employer or how much you trust your employees. The law affords no brownie points for a favourable employer and certainly pays no heed to the callous.

No matter how big or small the contract, proposal or mandate, till you know exactly what you're dealing with or getting into, get a legal opinion and sought professional advise. Save yourself the trouble of facing unlimited risk at the expense of good and timely advise.

A 25 year old, widow and mother of two asked me if she could claim compensation for the accidental death of her husband who was knocked down by another biker and died on the spot on impact. He was the sole bread winner and she's been a dependent housewife.

After reading the papers I learnt that her husband had skipped mandatory insurance for his vehicle. In law, this significantly affects the recourse which would otherwise have been available to her. Cases such as these are wake up calls to us all.

Educate those around you and make known to them the options available. Don't avoid the rules, even if they seem irritable or don't make that much sense at the time. Be responsible citizens. Spread the awareness among those who are the lesser advantaged among us, because ignorance of the law is no excuse.
