Student union fees
Students usually join the local student union for a small membership fee. This gives you access to various student activities and student discounts. Fees range from SEK 50-350 per semester, depending on the union. Your relevant student union can provide information on membership fees and benefits.
Textbooks
On average, expect to spend about SEK 750 per month on textbooks. In some subjects, like law and natural sciences, this figure is likely to be higher. Many student unions organise book sales where students can buy used textbooks cheaply; it’s also common for students to post notices on campus selling their used copies of previous years’ textbooks. Websites for buying used textbooks are also popular.

Up until 2010, Sweden has been one of the few countries in Europe where you can study for free. The Swedish Government has then passed a law that charges tuition and application fees for students from non-EU/EEA countries to be supplemented by Swedish Scholarship Programs. A significant number of Swedish Universities still offer scholarships in the form of tuition waivers for international students.

Students from around the world used to be able to study in Sweden tuition-free, until recently. However, in 2010, the government passed a new law, that has altered the payment structure for international students from outside the EU/EAA. The new structure includes both the tuition fees and the application fees.

The change has also been accompanied by many scholarships that are available to help students cover their tuition fees. Scholarship opportunities include financial waivers for international students, with scholarships offered both by the Swedish government and by individual universities in Sweden.

There are no age limits when it comes to the university entrance exam, called SweSAT (or Högskoleprovet in Swedish), and there is no need to be a Swedish citizen. However, you must meet the required permissions to apply to the course or program.
