A special statute, by the name of Protection of Women from acts of Domestic Violence, 2005 is in force whereby any aggrieved woman can claim maintenance, residence Orders and Protection Orders from the Court of Magistrate. This is a law especially for protecting and safeguarding the rights of aggrieved women.

It is mandatory for the Police Officer to register a F.I.R in Cognizable Cases( i.e., Cases where the Police can arrest without Warrant). Some examples are:
1. Murder
2. R**e
3. Dowry Death
4. Kidnapping and Abduction
5. Theft, etc.
However, in certain other Cases, the Police can initiate a Preliminary enquiry before registering a FIR. Some examples are:
A. Matrimonial/ Family Disputes
B. Medical Negligence
C. Commercial offences, etc.
In case, the Police Officer refuses to register a F.I.R, there are other remedies/ alternatives availability to the Complainant/ Aggrieved Party.
