A 41-year-old proclaimed offender, who was taken into police custody to be produced in a district court, allegedly fell unconscious and had to be hospitalised. While his family alleged his condition deteriorated due to harassment by police, officers denied the claims and said the man had a history of a heart ailment.

According to police, the incident took place Saturday, around noon, when Sanjay Kumar, an accused in a cheque bounce case, was at his house in Om Nagar.

The Chandigarh district court has directed a Ludhiana-based company to pay ₹16 lakh to a city resident in a cheque bounce case. The convict has also been awarded one year of rigorous imprisonment.

Actor-politician Ramanathan Sarathkumar and his wife Radikaa have been sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment in a cheque bounce case.

A special court for cases against MP and MLAs in Chennai convicted actor couple Ramanathan Sarathkumar and Radhika and one more person in a 2018 cheque bounce case and sentenced them to one-year rigorous imprisonment on Wednesday. In addition, the court has also imposed a penalty of Rs. 5 crores in connection with the case.

The All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) has suggested fixing of financial limits for attracting the criminal provisions relating to bouncing of cheques in the Negotiable Instruments Act instead of the decriminisalising the offence.

The major union in the banking sector representing about one million bankers also told the government that if mens rea or mala fide and criminal intent is an important criteria, then willful bank loan default should be made a serious criminal offence, which is hitherto being treated and tried under the civil procedure code.
