While the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 (Bill) was introduced in the parliament, this afternoon, amidst huge protest (on other issues), and we at undertake an in-depth study of the provisions and implications of the same, it is important to first understand the gaming and betting landscape in the country.

As per the Bill:

What comes under threat (complete ban, including on fund transfer and advertising): Online Money Gaming including Real Money Gaming on Skill Games (Casual Games, Fantasy Sports, Card Games), which was broadly permitted (except in some states - example Assam and Andhra Pradesh). Opinion Trading has had its’ fair share of issues off-late (ASCI white paper, Chhattisgarh Government).

What has been green lit: Esports (ironical that it has been spelt as “e-sports” 🤪) and Online Social Gaming (one-time access / subscription fee, no wager and meant for entertainment).

What remains independent and is not covered under the scope: Horse Racing (deemed as game of skill and largely permitted only in race courses) and Betting (chance based - Casinos permitted in states like Goa, Sports betting - illegall).

Key Responsibilities:
• Drafting, vetting, and negotiating a wide range of agreements in the sports, gaming and esports sector;
• Advising clients on regulatory, commercial, and compliance matters;
• Researching legal developments and their impact on the sports & gaming industry.

Requirements:
• LL.B. from a recognized university (LL.M. preferred);
• 1–3 years of post-qualification experience in corporate/commercial law (experience in sports law is an advantage);
• Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills;
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
• ⁠prior experience in intellectual property, media & entertainment, data privacy, contract drafting and negotiating is a plus.
