Railways Launches Free Wi-Fi at 28 Stations on Konkan Railway

In line with the government's Digital India initiative, the Railway Ministry on Sunday launched free Wi-Fi facility at 28 stations on Konkan railway in Maharashtra.
Unlimited free Wi-Fi facility will be provided at 28 stations from Kolad to Madure in the initial phase, according to an official statement issued on Sunday.
The ministry said this facility will help travelling public, commuters and tourists on Indian Railways to access essential information and they could use their time productively while waiting for trains at railway stations.
This initiative is a step towards making a smarter India, it added.

It has informed that the Joispot mobile application provides 2 megabits per second (mbps) speed wireless internet with unlimited uploads.
Indian Railways has tied up with Internet service providers Syscon and Joister for provision of this facility.
The free Wi-Fi internet bandwidth is provided at the stations of Kolad, Mangaon, Veer, Karanjadi, Vinhere, Diwankhavati, Khed, Anjani, Chiplun, Kamthe, Sawarda, Aravali Road, Sangameshwar, Ukshi, Bhoke and Ratnagiri.
Other stations with the availability of free internet under this initiative are Nivasar, Adavali, Vilavade, Rajapur Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Nandgaon Road, Kankavali, Sindhudurg, Kudal, Zarap, Sawantwadi Road and Madure.
The system can provide access to about 300 users at bigger stations and about 100 users at smaller stations.

Blue whale rescued off Dapoli coast in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Days after a nearly 37-feet-long bryde's whale was spotted dead on the Juhu beach in Mumbai, another huge blue whale was found along the Dapoli coast in Maharashtra's Konkan region.

The 40-foot-long blue whale, which was found stranded in the three-feet shallow waters along the beach at Kolthare village in Dapoli tehsil of Ratnagiri district, was rescued by the locals and marine experts on Wednesday.

"The whale was tied to two boats and taken around three km into the sea," N Vasudevan, Chief Conservator of Forests (mangrove cell) was quoted as saying to Press Trust of India.

According to a forest offical, this is the first incident where one has been rescued after the recent incidents involving deaths of stranded whales.

Carcasses of 45 Baleen Whales were washed ashore recently near Tiruchendur beach in Tamil Nadu while more than 250 stranded whales were pushed back into the deep sea.

In June last year, a 42-feet-long blue whale was washed ashore at Revdanda coast, about 17 km south of Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district.

Forest officials had contacted marine biologists after spotting the whale while it was struggling to survive. However, the whale died later.

Last week, a big bryde's whale, weighing 20 tonne, had died after being washed ashore to Juhu beach and was buried beyond the high tide line there.

The Bryde's Whale is an endangered species found in the Arabian Sea.

Mumbai: A fishermen caught a gigantic sawfish while fishing near Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra on Monday morning.

The rare sawfish weighs approximately 700 kgs and is 20-feet long.

The news was confirmed by Sindhudurg District Collector Uday Chowdhary.

Meanwhile, the picture of the sawfish found in Konkan region is also doing rounds on the social media.

Fisherman Muneer Mujawar found the fish in his net when he was returning to the shore.

"The fish is around 20 feet long and weighs around 700 kg. It is known as sawfish, because of its nose extension lined with sharp transverse teeth," Mujawar said.

He said that it was rare to find such fish in the net.

"When I found the sawfish, it was already injured. It must have tried to escape from the net," he said.

Mujawar, however, said that in the past, similar incidents have occurred in Sindhudurg, wherein some rare fish landed in the fishing net.

Sindhudurg is the southernmost coastal district of the state.

Vijaydurg is famous for dolphin sightings.
