Adultery is no longer a crime in India—the Supreme Court decriminalised it in 2018.

But that doesn’t mean it’s consequence-free: adultery can still have civil/matrimonial consequences, and in some situations a spouse may even try a civil damages claim against the “third person” alleging “alienation of affection” (it’s fact-specific and not a guaranteed outcome).

So if you find out the person you’re dating is married, the safest move is to step away—protect your peace and avoid getting pulled into legal notices or litigation.

Your credit score is set to update every week from July 2026.

RBI has mandated credit bureaus to refresh your credit report every 7 days—not just once a month.

For you, that means one missed EMI or cheque bounce can hit your score within a week.

But a cleared overdue, successful settlement, or on‑time payment can start repairing your score just as fast.

In any dispute with a lender—loan rejection, higher interest, or wrong reporting—these weekly logs become a powerful record of your behaviour and a timeline you can rely on.

Star Health was ordered to pay ₹50,000 to a policyholder, along with interest and compensation for mental harassment and legal costs, after a District Consumer Commission found its claim rejection unjustified. The insurer had refused a hospitalisation claim saying a cheaper treatment option was available and the chosen procedure was not necessary.

The Commission held that treatment decisions rest with the treating doctor, not the insurer, and Star Health failed to show any clear exclusion in the policy that allowed such a deduction. As a result, the forum termed the refusal a deficiency in service and an unfair trade practice under the Consumer Protection Act.

India’s dark pattern crackdown has caught another major player.

Quick commerce startup Zepto has been fined ₹7 lakh by the Central Consumer Protection Authority for misleading design tactics on its app.

Investigators found hidden handling fees and pre‑selected add‑ons that tricked users into paying more — a clear violation of the 2023 Dark Pattern Guidelines.

The authority called it “deceptive and anti‑consumer,” ordering Zepto to fix its interface and prove compliance within 15 days.

This comes amid rising regulatory scrutiny, after Rapido was similarly fined for false claims earlier this year.

With e‑commerce under the spotlight, India’s consumer watchdog is sending a strong message — digital convenience cannot come at the cost of consumer trust.

JioMart has been fined ₹1 lakh for selling walkie‑talkies that did not operate in the legally allowed licence‑free band and for hiding key compliance details from customers.

The regulator found that product listings never clearly mentioned that these devices needed licences and certifications before use, which misled buyers into thinking they were plug‑and‑play and fully legal.

The authority held this to be a misleading advertisement and an unfair trade practice under the Consumer Protection Act, and ordered JioMart to stop listing such non‑compliant devices and file a compliance report.

Wedding gifts make celebrations joyous and they’re tax-free too! Under Section 56(2)(x) of the Income Tax Act, gifts received by the bride and groom on their wedding day are fully exempt from tax, no matter the amount or donor.

This includes cash, jewellery, property, or other valuable assets.
The Mumbai tribunal clarified that ‘relatives’ include step-siblings, broadening the exemption net.

Even gifts received just before or after the wedding with genuine intent qualify. Gifts from non-relatives are tax-free only if below ₹50,000 annually; above that, they attract tax.

This judgment brings clarity over tax exemptions on wedding gifts and helps taxpayers avoid surprises during the wedding season.

Ever wondered if maternity leave is a privilege or a right?
A recent landmark decision by the Supreme Court of India has unequivocally affirmed its constitutional right status, marking a monumental shift for working women across the nation. This ruling stems from the tenacious fight of a teacher whose request for leave was denied, ultimately paving the way for a victory that underscores dignity, equality, and the essential right to rest for every woman, irrespective of the number of children.
It's a powerful statement that resonates beyond borders, establishing a crucial precedent at a time when many global economies are still debating guaranteed paid maternity leave. This judicial pronouncement seamlessly interweaves labor justice with gender equality, reinforcing the judiciary's vital role in upholding women's rights beyond mere policy pronouncements.
