Accountability and Road Safety – Are Rules Different for Different People?
I would like to bring a recurring issue to the attention of the authorities and the public.
At the cycle track on Paschim Marg, Sector 38-D, two vehicles are consistently parked on the track/green belt throughout the day:
Police ERSS Vehicle: CH01GA0710
Private i20: CH01BZ6155
The Situation So Far:
I reported this violation to the Chandigarh Traffic Police via WhatsApp. Initially, I was told the ERSS vehicle has "immunity" to park for some time. However, this is not a temporary emergency stop; these vehicles are parked there as if it’s a permanent parking spot, day after day.
When I questioned the status of the private vehicle (CH01BZ6155), which likely belongs to an official, the department finally replied stating they have "informed Police Station 39.
My Concerns:
Selective Immunity: Why was the private vehicle ignored in the first instance? Does being a police official or a "known person" grant immunity from traffic laws that apply to ordinary citizens?
Lack of Accountability: Simply "informing" a police station is not a resolution. How can the public be assured that a challan has actually been issued?
Safety Hazard: Cycle tracks are dedicated lanes for cyclists' safety. By blocking them, these vehicles force cyclists into the main road traffic, risking lives.
I request the Chandigarh Traffic Police and higher authorities to move beyond "informing" and provide proof of action (Challan Details).
Rules should be enforced equally, whether it’s a private citizen or an official vehicle.
