On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s petition challenging a criminal defamation case filed by the Registrar of Gujarat University regarding his remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications. It was affirming the Gujarat High Court’s previous dismissal of Kejriwal’s petition against the summons issued in the defamation proceedings.
Kejriwal had approached the Supreme Court following the Gujarat High Court’s rejection of his plea. He argued that his statements, questioning why Gujarat University had not published Modi’s degree, were not defamatory and suggested that any harm should be addressed by Modi himself, rather than the University Registrar. Senior Advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, emphasised that his client’s remarks did not meet the threshold for defamation.
