Compliance reminder: CBDT (India's Central Board of Direct Taxes) has extended the Tax Audit Report deadline for AY 2026-27 from 30 September to 21 October 2026, with the linked income tax return due date pushed to 21 November 2026. If your business falls under the tax-audit requirement, this is the week to finalise accounts and get the audit report filed, since a missed deadline risks penalties and delays your ITR filing too. Reach out if you'd like a hand closing this out before the window shuts.

Case Study: One of our recent engagements involved a trading firm facing recurring GST Input Tax Credit (ITC) mismatches between GSTR-2B (the auto-drafted credit statement) and their own purchase register — credit was getting blocked simply because a few suppliers filed late or misreported invoices. A structured vendor-wise reconciliation, direct supplier follow-ups, and a monthly pre-filing checklist cleared the backlog and stopped it from recurring. Takeaway: your eligible ITC depends on what your suppliers report, not just what you've paid, so regular reconciliation matters as much as the payment itself.

NRI Tax Planning: If you're an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) planning to sell property in India, remember that TDS (tax deducted at source) applies on the full sale value under Section 195 — not just your profit — unless you secure a Lower Deduction Certificate (Form 13) in advance from the Income Tax Department. Moving back to India for good? You may qualify for RNOR (Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident) status for a transition period, during which your foreign income stays outside Indian tax. And if a DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement) is part of your plan, keep a valid Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) ready before you file. A little advance planning saves a lot of surprises at tax time.

UAE VAT Tip: As of 1 October 2026, the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) requires businesses to go beyond simply holding a valid tax invoice to recover Input VAT (the VAT paid on purchases that you can claim back). Under FTA Decision No. 13 of 2026, you must now verify your supplier's identity, legal existence and business location, and keep that documentation on file. If your annual spend with a single supplier exceeds AED 375,000, enhanced checks apply too, including bank account confirmation and a reputation review, refreshed at least every 12 months. Worth reviewing your supplier onboarding files now, before this comes up in an audit.

GST Update: If your business turnover ever crossed ₹5 crore in any year since 2017-18, e-invoicing becomes mandatory for your B2B, export and SEZ sales — and that requirement stays permanent, even if turnover dips later. Before claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC, the tax you've already paid on purchases) in GSTR-3B, always reconcile it against GSTR-2B, your auto-generated credit statement — and if you've accepted or rejected any invoice on the Invoice Management System (IMS) after the 14th of the month, recompute GSTR-2B first so your figures match. A five-minute reconciliation check now can save you a compliance notice later.

Quick compliance reminder for our GST-registered clients on the QRMP scheme (Quarterly Return, Monthly Payment): the GSTR-3B summary return for the July-September 2026 quarter is due by 22 October for Category 1 states (mainly southern and western India) and 24 October for Category 2 states (mainly northern and eastern India). Missing this date brings late fees and interest, so it is worth reconciling your books now rather than rushing in the final days. Not sure which deadline applies to your state, or need a hand filing? Reach out to our team.

A case from our practice this week: a trading client's GST Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims weren't fully matching GSTR-2B, the government's auto-generated credit statement. Reconciling the purchase register against it showed the gap was due to a few vendors who hadn't yet filed their own returns, so the credit simply hadn't appeared on the portal yet. We held back that portion of the claim, followed up with the vendors, and kept the client's filing accurate instead of risking a mismatch notice later. The takeaway for any business: reconcile your purchase records against GSTR-2B every month, not just at year-end.

NRIs selling property in India: under Section 195 of the Income Tax Act, the buyer must deduct TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) on the sale - typically 12.5% on long-term capital gains plus surcharge and cess - unless you secure a lower/nil deduction certificate (Form 13) in advance based on your actual gain. Separately, if you're claiming DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement) relief to avoid being taxed twice on the same income, you'll need a valid Tax Residency Certificate from your country of residence along with Form 10F filed on the income tax portal. Planning these steps before a sale or before year-end filing can help avoid unnecessary cash-flow strain and notices.

A quick VAT update for UAE businesses: starting 1 October 2026, the Federal Tax Authority's (FTA) Decision No. 13 of 2026 requires you to verify suppliers and transactions before recovering input VAT (Value Added Tax) - including checking a supplier's bank details and reputation once annual dealings cross AED 375,000. If a supply is later tied to tax evasion and you reasonably should have known, the FTA can deny the input tax claim entirely, so it's worth documenting your supplier due-diligence process now.

A quick GST note for growing businesses: once your turnover crosses ₹5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18, e-invoicing (raising invoices through the government's official Invoice Registration Portal) becomes mandatory for B2B and export sales, and that requirement stays in place even if turnover later dips below ₹5 crore. If you're approaching this mark, it's worth reviewing your invoicing software now rather than scrambling later. And if your turnover is already above ₹10 crore, remember invoices reported more than 30 days late can't be used to claim input tax credit (ITC) - the credit you get back for GST already paid on business purchases.
