Consumer Protection in India: Your Rights Matter
From online shopping scams and defective products to delayed housing projects and misleading advertisements, consumer issues in India are growing rapidly. Many people hesitate to act, thinking the process is costly or complicated. But the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 makes filing complaints simple, affordable, and effective.
As a consumer, you have the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose, the right to be heard, and the right to seek redressal. If you face a problem, begin by collecting all bills, receipts, agreements, and communication records. Send a written notice to the seller or service provider. If they fail to resolve the issue, you can file a complaint before the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions:
• District Commission: up to ₹50 lakh
• State Commission: ₹50 lakh to ₹2 crore
• National Commission: above ₹2 crore
For convenience, complaints can also be filed online through the E-Daakhil Portal, which allows you to submit documents, track progress, and attend hearings virtually.
Consumer forums can award refunds, replacements, penalties, and compensation not only for financial loss but also for mental harassment. Awareness and timely action are the keys to safeguarding your rights.
