As of early 2026, the regulations governing the UK Skilled Worker visa have become considerably more stringent, establishing a minimum general salary threshold of £41,700, raising the English language proficiency requirements to B2 level, and necessitating full salary payments in each pay period. Additional modifications include the introduction of a "Visa Brake" for certain nationalities, increased application fees, and a possible extension of the settlement period to 10 years.
Key 2026 Skilled Worker Visa Rule Changes
Higher Salary Thresholds: The minimum annual salary for general skilled workers is now set at £41,700, an increase from previous years.
Stricter English Requirements: Beginning January 8, 2026, applicants are required to demonstrate a B2 level of English proficiency, up from the previous B1 level.
Salary Compliance: Effective April 7, 2026, sponsors are obligated to pay the full required salary during each pay period, thereby eliminating salary averaging.
"Visa Brake" Restriction: Starting March 26, 2026, a "Visa Brake" will limit new applications from Afghan nationals, potentially leading to application refusals.
Increased Fees: The application fees for a 3-year visa have risen to £943 for in-country applications and £819 for out-of-country applications, effective April 8, 2026.
Settlement Time Extensions: The standard qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) may be extended from 5 to 10 years for many applicants, or even up to 15 years for positions below RQF level 6.
