🚨 Important FSSAI Update for Food Businesses
FSSAI Restricts Use of Metallic Pins in Food Packaging & Handling
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed Food Business Operators (FBOs) to immediately stop the use of metallic pins, staple pins, wires, and similar materials in food packaging and handling practices.
This step has been taken to prevent risks arising from foreign objects being found in food products, especially in bakery items, cakes, sweets, and packaged foods.
⚠️ Why is this a serious concern?
Use of metallic materials in food packaging may lead to:
❌ Mouth and throat injuries
❌ Choking hazards
❌ Internal injuries and health complications
🚫 Food businesses must avoid metallic pins in:
• Cake & bakery packaging
• Sweet boxes
• Food packets and pouches
• Snack packaging
• Takeaway food parcels
• Any food-contact packaging application
✅ Safer Alternatives Recommended:
✔ Food-grade adhesive tapes
✔ Tamper-evident seals
✔ Heat-sealing methods
✔ Approved food-contact packaging materials
⚖️ Non-compliance may result in regulatory action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
📢 Food manufacturers, bakers, sweet shops, restaurants, snack producers, and all FBOs are advised to review their packaging practices and ensure compliance with FSSAI requirements.
