GNLU Centre for Law and Technology cordially invites you to a talk by GNLU Alumna Kelly Amal Dhru which will be a journey through some of the persistent and pressing questions of ethics and laws governing technology where we will ask whether and how these debates challenge our understanding of what it means to be a “person”: a category that is said to generate a set of protective rights (and in most cases, also duties), and differentiated from “property”, something that be bought and sold. While autonomy has been considered to be one of the leading principles in Bioethics (and much more!), to what extent is it helpful when we walk into the world of human-animal chimeras, CRISPR-Cas9, brain-machine interface, and cyborgs?

*About the Speaker:*

Kelly Amal Dhru studied law at Gujarat National Law University, and Bachelor of Civil Law (Distinction) and MPhil in Legal Philosophy at University College, University of Oxford. In India, shewas the Research Director of Research Foundation for Governance in India, a think-tank involved in legislative drafting and conducting legal awareness through initiatives such as Lawtoons (www.lawtoons.in) Kelly was also Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellow in Public Health Law and Bioethics at Harvard Law School. She is currently a doctoral fellow at Albrecht-Mendelssohn- Bartholdy Graduate School of Law and a Research Associate at Hamburg University in Germany. Her PhD thesis focuses on the assumptions of autonomy in the concept of a “legal right-holder” in. the context of the Emerging Neurotechnologies.
