From triple talaq to the right to privacy and the 2G scam acquittal, Indian courts delivered some landmark verdicts in 2017:-

1. Delhi gang r**e case, 5 May
The Supreme Court upholds the death penalty awarded by a trial court to the four convicts in the ‘Nirbhaya’ gang r**e case.

2. Beef ban, 11 July
The top court puts on hold the controversial order issued by the Centre banning the slaughter of cattle

3 September 7, 2015
Earlier this year the Maharashtra government banned the slaughter of cows and the possession of beef.

4. Triple talaq row, 22 August
In a landmark judgment, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court declares triple talaq illegal and unconstitutional in a 3:2 majority.

5. Right to privacy, 24 August
A nine-judge bench of SC rules that right to privacy is a fundamental right, emerging from personal liberty and guarantee of life under Article 21 of the Constitution.

6. Ram Rahim verdict, 25 August
Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim sentenced to 20 years in prison by a CBI court for ra**ng a former sadhvi in 2002.

7. Mumbai blast case, 7 September
A special TADA court convicts five out of the seven accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts that killed 257 people. While three get death sentences, Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan were sentenced to life.

8. Aarushi murder case, 12 October
The Supreme Court acquits Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the murder case of their daughter Aarushi Talwar.

9. Judges’ bribery case, 13 November
CJI Dipak Mishra invalidates an order passed by a two-judge bench, headed by Justice J. Chelameswar, in the judges bribery case.

10. Hadiya ‘love-jihad’ case, 27 November
The SC asks Hadiya Jahan — the woman from Kerala whose conversion from Hinduism to Islam and marriage to a Muslim man led to a controversy — to go back to her college in Salem, Tamil Nadu.

11. 2G scam, 21 December
The CBI’s special court acquits all the accused of the 2G spectrum scam due to the failure of the prosecution to prove the charges.

12. Fodder scam, 23 December
Lalu Prasad Yadav is convicted in the second fodder scam case by a special CBI court Ranchi...
