Indiaโ€™s patent landscape is steadily evolving with a more technology-aligned interpretation of Section 3(k) of the Patents Act, 1970. The Madras High Court, in Trans Union LLC vs Controller of Patents, set aside a refusal order, clarifying the patentability of computer-related inventions.
In this article, DPS Parmar highlights how the Court reaffirmed that algorithms and computer programs are not excluded per se if they demonstrate technical contribution through technical means. The Court recognised the inventionโ€™s role in improving data matching and retrieval, while also remanding the matter to ensure precise claim scope. Building on the Ab Initio ruling, this decision strengthens an innovation-friendly approach to software-related patents in India. The American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) Women in IP Law Committee Global Networking Event 2026 โ€“ , hosted at Gujarat Technological University on 17 April, brought together an inspiring community of women scientists, researchers, inventors, legal professionals, and industry leaders for a powerful dialogue on โ€œ โ€“ Women in IP Redefining the Narrative.โ€
Set in Ahmedabadโ€™s vibrant academic ecosystem, the session highlighted the critical role women play across the IP lifecycle, from research and invention to patenting, trademark strategy, enforcement, and commercialisation. It also underscored the role of universities in enabling women to translate ideas into protected, market-ready technologies.
The discussion spotlighted key national initiatives such as the Atal Innovation Mission, Startup India Initiative, and the Prime Ministerโ€™s Research Fellowship, which are empowering women in STEM to actively engage in innovation, patenting, and technology transfer.
The distinguished panel, Dr Pina Bhatt, Ms Gopi Jatin Trivedi, Dr Gunjan Chawla Arora, Dr Kshipra Chauhan, Ms Manisha Tiwari, and Ms Pankti Mistri, shared diverse perspectives across academia, research, industry, and IP practice.
Discussions were anchored around three core themes: Entry and retention, leadership and power, and access and impact. These conversations candidly examined the persistent underrepresentation of women, particularly women scientists and inventors, in advanced IP roles such as patent prosecution, IP litigation, licensing, valuation, and strategic decision-making.
A key takeaway was the need to move beyond participation toward influence. The panel emphasised that women must be supported not only as contributors to research and invention, but also as architects of IP strategy, enforcement, and monetisation. A rapid-fire segment added honest reflections on real-world challenges, alongside concrete opportunities for growth, mentorship, and systemic change.
The session concluded with a shared commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and impact-driven IP ecosystem, rooted in strong academic foundations, research excellence, and innovation-led platforms. It reaffirmed that empowering women scientists, researchers, and inventors is essential, not only for their leadership in IP creation and protection, but for shaping the future of innovation itself in a sustainable and meaningful way.

The American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) Women in IP Law Committee Global Networking Event 2026, , hosted at JW Marriott on April 16, brought together an exceptional group of women leaders and industry professionals for an insightful evening centred around this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œ โ€“ Women in IP Redefining the Narrativeโ€.
Set in the vibrant city of Pune, known for its strong academic, research, and innovation ecosystem, the discussion reflected the spirit of a city that continues to empower women professionals to grow, lead, and shape the future of intellectual property.
The panel brought together inspiring voices to unpack the realities of womenโ€™s journeys in IP, moving beyond representation to focus on retention, leadership, and meaningful participation. The discussion highlighted the noticeable drop-off of women over time despite strong entry-level presence, while reflecting on the underlying structural, cultural, and societal factors that influence long-term career progression.
Key discussions explored how structural and workplace factors, such as geography, language, and organisational culture, shape womenโ€™s access to IP systems and career progression, while also examining whether flexibility has become a business imperative and how organisations often prioritise availability over excellence, which impacts retention and leadership opportunities. The panel further addressed accessibility challenges for women entrepreneurs, policy gaps affecting women-led MSMEs and start-ups, and the need to move beyond filing numbers to assess meaningful participation, while highlighting key drop-offs from idea to protection to commercialisation and the systemic changes required to bridge these gaps.
The memorable evening concluded with powerful reflections on the truths we often hesitate to acknowledge and a collective call to action to drive visible change in the coming years, ensuring that women in IP not only participate but thrive as leaders, innovators, and decision-makers.

The AIPLA Women in IP Global Networking Event 2026, Edition, hosted at Taj Deccan on April 15, brought together an exceptional group of women leaders and industry professionals for an insightful evening centred around this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œ โ€“ Women in IP Redefining the Narrativeโ€.
The panel discussion created space for honest and meaningful conversations on the realities of womenโ€™s journeys in the IP profession, moving beyond surface-level representation to examine what true inclusion, influence and leadership look like in practice. The seasoned panellists shared candid reflections on career progression, balancing ambition with authenticity and challenging long-standing structures that often reward visibility over value.
Key discussions included the importance of recognising non-linear career paths, addressing the invisible reasons women leave the profession mid-career, and rethinking workplace cultures to better reflect real lives and evolving aspirations. The discussion also explored how technical credibility, authority, and leadership readiness are often perceived, and what organisations can do to create more equitable pathways to growth. Speakers also highlighted the need to ensure that women are not only participating within IP systems, but are equally empowered as innovators, creators, decision-makers, and beneficiaries of protection, commercialisation, and enforcement.
The memorable evening concluded with a shared call to action to move from symbolic progress to structural change and to collectively shape an IP space where women can thrive, lead and redefine the future.
