A Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Vineet Saran also imposed costs of ₹1 lakh on him for misusing law to delay the case.

"It has been 14 years and you are on bail. You are accused of killing your wife and you come to Supreme Court. This is a gross misuse of law, atrocious," observed the bench.

The Court was hearing the case of a police constable who had a first information report (FIR) registered against him in 2007. It was alleged that the police constable had killed his wife after dowry demands were not met.

When the hearing commenced, the CJI sought to know if the person was still in police service.

The lawyer informed the court that the person was suspended.

To this the CJI said, "You have to be removed forthwith and be straight put into jail. This is a gross misuse of law."

The Bench went on to impose cost of ₹1 lakh on the petitioner and also directed the trial court to decide the case in three months.
