Mourning the Passing of Fali S Nirman Sir,
Today, the legal fraternity mourns the loss of one of its brightest stars, Fali S. Nariman. His passing leaves a void that can never be filled. As a young Indian lawyer, I looked up to him with immense respect and admiration for his unparalleled contributions to the field of law.
Reading Fali Nariman's cases has always been a source of enlightenment for me. His remarkable intellect, unwavering integrity, and deep understanding of the law set him apart as a titan in the legal arena. His landmark cases, such as:
1. Kesavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala: This historic case established the basic structure doctrine and placed limitations on the amending power of the Indian Parliament, laying down the foundation for judicial review and constitutional supremacy.
2. Indira Gandhi v. Raj Narain: In this case, Fali Nariman's advocacy played a pivotal role in challenging the election of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, leading to the landmark judgment that declared her election void on grounds of electoral malpractices.
3. S.R. Bommai v. Union of India: Fali Nariman's expertise shone brightly in this case, where the Supreme Court upheld the principle of federalism and established guidelines for the imposition of President's Rule in Indian states.
4. Union Carbide Corporation v. Union of India: Fali Nariman's representation in this case, which stemmed from the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, showcased his commitment to seeking justice for the victims and holding corporations accountable for their actions.
Studying his work isn't just about learning the intricacies of law; it's about imbibing the principles of justice, fairness, and advocacy that he so passionately upheld throughout his illustrious career. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of legal minds to strive for excellence and uphold the highest ethical standards.

Fali Sam Nariman (born 10 January 1929 - 21 February 2024) was an Indian jurist. He was a senior advocate to the Supreme Court of India since 1971 and was the President of the Bar Association of India from 1991 to 2010. Nariman was an internationally recognized jurist on international arbitration. He was honored with the 19th Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2018. He was one of India's most distinguished constitutional lawyers and argued several leading cases. He remained Additional Solicitor General of India May 1972- June 1975. He was awarded with Padma Vibhushan too.
