“Let them go to HC. Otherwise, sometimes people feel we are having institutional bias.”

The Supreme Court today indicated that it would consider referring to larger bench the issue as to whether grounds of arrest are mandatorily required to be supplied in writing to the accused at the time of arrest.

A small household fight became a criminal case, but the Jharkhand High Court drew the line.

The Court held that one incident of domestic quarrel or abusive exchange by a mother-in-law cannot automatically become cruelty under Section 498A IPC unless serious harassment, dowry demand, physical torture, or legally recognised cruelty is clearly proved.

Notorious Drug Peddler Detained Under PIT-NDPS Act in Poonch

Poonch, July 4, 2026

In a significant step towards curbing the menace of drug trafficking and ensuring a drug-free society, District Police Poonch has secured the preventive detention of a notorious drug peddler under the provisions of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1988.

The accused, Irfan Shakoor, son of Shakoor Ahmed, resident of Dhargloon, Tehsil Balakote, District Poonch, has been detained pursuant to a detention order issued by the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, on the basis of a detailed dossier prepared and submitted by District Police Poonch.

The detenue is a habitual drug peddler who has been consistently involved in the illegal trade of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. He has been previously booked in the following cases under the NDPS Act:

1. FIR No. 52/2021 under Sections 8(a)/21/22 NDPS Act registered at Police Station Gursai.
2. FIR No. 30/2022 under Sections 8(a)/21/22 NDPS Act registered at Police Station Mendhar.

Despite repeated legal action, the accused continued to indulge in illicit drug trafficking activities, thereby posing a serious threat to public health, public order and the future of the youth. In view of his persistent involvement in narcotics-related offences, preventive detention under the PIT-NDPS Act was invoked to effectively prevent him from engaging in further illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

The detention warrant was executed successfully by Police Station Gursai, and the detenue has been lodged in District Jail Rajouri in accordance with the provisions of the PIT-NDPS Act.

District Police Poonch reiterates its unwavering commitment towards eradicating the drug menace from society and will continue to take stringent legal action against drug peddlers and all those involved in narcotics trafficking. The general public is urged to actively cooperate with the police by sharing credible information regarding drug-related activities so that the collective fight against drugs can be strengthened.

CRPF Constable Convicted for Wife's Murder by Anantnag Court

Anantnag, June 30th (CNS): A Sessions Court in Anantnag on Tuesday convicted a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable for the murder of his wife in a 2021 case. The court has scheduled a separate hearing to determine the quantum of sentence.

The judgment was delivered by the Court of Additional Sessions Judge Anantnag in FIR No. 57/2021 registered at Police Station Anantnag under Section 302 of the IPC.
According to the prosecution, the convict, Shankara Naik, strangled his wife, Sama Bhai, with a scarf inside their residential quarters at the CRPF Camp, Raghunath Mandir, Sheerbagh, on March 29, 2021, following a domestic dispute. He later informed his superior officers, after which police registered the case and launched an investigation.

During the investigation, police examined the crime scene, collected forensic and scientific evidence, and completed all medico-legal formalities before filing a chargesheet.

During the trial, the prosecution produced medical experts, forensic specialists, investigating officers and other witnesses. The post-mortem report confirmed that the victim died due to ligature strangulation, establishing the death as homicidal.

After evaluating the evidence, the court held that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. It observed that the chain of circumstantial evidence was complete and that the accused failed to provide a credible explanation for the death of his wife while she was in his exclusive company.

The court accordingly convicted Shankara Naik under Section 302 IPC. Arguments on the quantum of sentence will be heard before the court pronounces the final punishment.
