A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court unanimously struck down the electoral bond scheme as 'unconstitutional'. The SC held that the scheme violates Article 19 of the Constitution by not disclosing the funding to political parties.

The State Bank of India (SBI), which is mandated to issue such bonds, has been asked to stop issuing them with immediate effect. The SBI has also been directed to submit the details of the purchase of electoral bonds along with the details regarding their encashment by political parties to the Election Commission (EC) by March 6. The EC has been directed to publish all the details on its website one week after it has received such information.

The state of Kerala has been grappling with fiscal challenges. The Reserve Bank of India has also categorized this state as one of the highly stressed states requiring urgent financial corrective measures.

The state has petitioned for additional funds from the Centre to tackle the crises. Also, the state has pleaded for a relaxation in the borrowing restrictions under exceptional cases.

The finance minister of Kerala, K. N. Balagopal said, "Our prime concern revolves around the fact that we are not being given the funds we rightly deserve."

While the state's borrowing limit is around Rs.11,000 crore, it is requesting to permit a loan for an amount of Rs.24,000 crore. The Supreme Court presses that such relaxation be considered for a 'special' case. In addition, the court has also requested the Centre to explore potential measures to be implemented within ten days to assist the state.
