Conned by matrimonial sites, they knock consumer court………………

Marriages are no more made in heaven but at the best online matrimonial sites, where one can get his or her soul mate from online pool of individuals who are looking for prospective match.

Many of online marriage bureaus are not doing proper homework, particularly, not digging into users' background, their identity, filtering and blocking those who are operating in fictitious name and posting wrong information. If rise in number of consumer cases filed against these matrimonial sites is taken an indication, it shows all is not well on this front.

Case One , A 25 Years old Lady, got shock of her life when online match fixed by her parents turned into a cruel joke. She could not believe her Bangalore-based 27-year-old IT professional match was in reality a 65-year-old retired professor.

When there was no reply or apology from the online marriage bureau despite repeated online mails and complaints sent to matrimonial site, Rupal decided to file a complaint the e-company for cheating and forgery.

Case Two , A 31 years old boy , signed up for his matrimonial profile with a leading online bureau. On finding his match, he decided to meet the girl. But the site refused to show a picture and demanded Rs 5,000 for having access to further detail about the girl.

Surprised, Meet refused to pay amount and decided to meet her without seeing her photograph. On reaching the venue, he found a man, aged 25, was waiting for him.

"When you are signing up with a matrimonial site you are subscribing to their services to help you find a suitable bride or groom. But if you face forgery and double cross in return for your money and breach of faith you have a right to file a complaint against these online marriage bureaus.

British Airways to pay Rs.1.5 lakh compensation to Indian passenger
A Indian scholar invited to a US conference has won his battle against British Airways in the top consumer forum, which has directed the airline to compensate him Rs.150,000 ($2,600) for his "mental agony and harassment".
Complainant Rabindra Nath Pati was prevented from boarding a flight from Philadelphia on his way home despite holding a valid ticket, forcing him to overstay in the US.
"Looking into the facts and circumstances of the case in entirety, we feel that a sum of Rs.150,000 should be awarded to the complainant for ticket, the expenses incurred for stay in the US and also as compensation for mental agony and harassment," the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission said in a recent order.
Pati said he was invited by Penn State University, Pennsylvania, to attend the Indigenous Knowledge Conference-2004 between May 27 and 29. He applied for a visa to the US consulate at Kolkata, indicating that he wanted to stay in the US for two weeks. He purchased a British Airways return ticket for Rs.62,992 from Swosti Travels in Bhubaneswar.
Pati said after the conference he went to Philadelphia airport June 22, 2004 to board the British Airways flight on his way back to India. The airline did not permit him to board the aircraft.
The airline staff told him his visa stood expired May 29, 2004 and, since he had no valid visa, he was supposed to obtain a transit visa for flying through Britain, Pati said. According to Pati, his US visa was valid for six months as a short-term scholar.
Pati requested British Airways to refund the balance cost of his return ticket so that he could fly home by some other airline which didn't insist on a transit visa. British Airways, however, told him that the refund could be given only at the place of booking in India.
Pati complained that he was forced to stay on in the US and he had to borrow money from some friends as well as spend from his own resources. He purchased a ticket on an Alitalia flight and reached India July 17, 2004.
The district forum Feb 7, 2005, directed British Airways to refund to Pati the balance cost of the return ticket - Rs.31,486 - and pay himRs.50,000 towards the cost of living in the US from June 22, 2004, to July 16, 2004. The forum also awarded compensation of Rs.50,000 for the mental agony caused to Pati and Rs.2,000 as cost of litigation.
The airline filed an appeal against the district forum order in the state consumer commission which allowed Pati a total of Rs.72,896, which included the balance of the return ticket at Rs.31,496 and the cost of Alitalia ticket at Rs.41,400.
The national commission, however, disagreed with the state commission on the amount of ticket refund.
"The complainant cannot be given the benefit of getting refund for the unused British Airways ticket and also allowed the value of new ticket purchased from Alitalia. At best, he can be awarded one of these amounts, otherwise it will amount to a double benefit," Chaudhari said.
British Airways now has the option of challenging the national commission's verdict in the Supreme Court.

We have informed our consumers as to how delay in handing over the possession of completed houses can entail penalty. See Penalty Charges In Case Of Delayed Possession. However, despite the regulations, builders continue to harass the consumers over the possession of completed houses. An extreme case was seen when the possession was delayed for about 10 years, till consumer forum stepped in. See Buyers To Get Promised Home After 10 Years. The latest in the chain of the harassment by the builders was seen in Mumbai where a builder has been ordered by Mumbai Suburban Maharashtra District Consumer Forum to pay arrears for the rent of 24 months for which the flat possession was delayed and continue paying the rent till the time the flats are actually handed over. The delay in handing over the possession according to the Forum amounted to unfair trade practice. Furthermore, the forum also specified that of it was not possible for the builder to complete the flats, the builder should give the consumer an option to buy a flat of the same measurement at the rate the flat was initially booked. The builder harassment menace refuses to relent despite innumerable rulings by the consumer forums, striking down these practices by the builders. It has almost become a vicious cycle where builder continues the harassment till finally some consumer decides to take the matter to a consumer forum which taken stringent action against the practice; only to have the same cycle repeated with some other builder, in some other place.
