Our story - Legal Aid Family Counseling Centre -Society of Health Education

LEGAL AID FAMILY COUNSELING CENTRE is a branch of (SOCIETY OF HEALTH EDUCATION LEGAL TRAINING & EMERGENCY REHABILITATION) provides Services and legal advice and representation to the people who cannot afford private Advocates/Attorney in all criminal matters excluding sexual offences and offences involving the cultivation, possession, sale, trafficking or otherwise dealing in narcotics with reference to civil matters, legal assistance is provided in all cases including land matters, in particular prescriptive title. Special priority is afforded to juveniles and children in conflict with the law, victims of domestic violence, the elderly and the disabled. Children who are victims of domestic violence are afforded legal representation in court and counselling to help them in court proceedings that can last for years, and result in irreparable damage in the pursuit of justice. The Centre is currently preparing to address the upsurge in violence against children, police brutality and the violation of the constitutional and rights of children. The degrading and dehumanizing conditions which children are forced to endure while awaiting trial, the physical abuse and torture of children in police custody and the detention of children in the same facility with adults require urgent and immediate remedial action. A) How to Get Legal Aid The Legal Aid Centre is a non-profit society that was established to provide equal access to the justice system for poor, low-income and vulnerable people who would otherwise be unable to afford an attorney/advocate. B) About Us The Legal Aid Centre is a humanitarian response to the needs challenging economic conditions resulting from the decline of the job in industry have impacted every aspect of social life, including access to the justice system. High rates of unemployment resulting from job losses and the constantly rising cost of living, have severely jeopardized the ability of residents to secure the protection of what is arguably one of the most fundamental civil rights in a democratic society — the right to equal access to justice. C) Our specific objectives are as follows:  To provide legal advice and representation in civil matters and in criminal cases where adequate legal representation would make a material difference to the prospect of an accused person receiving a fair trial.  To provide legal representation and assistance to women and children who are victims of domestic violence.  To provide public education and training in the pursuit of justice and the reduction of crime and violence in the community.  To conduct evaluation research to ascertain the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the services provided, and to respond appropriately to the results of this research. Legal aid is available for people who cannot afford to pay for a private attorney/advocate when confronted with a legal problem. Our counsellors are well-trained, dedicated, and care about the people they serve. Counselling is simply sitting down with a counsellor to talk about the problems or challenges in your life. At FAMILY COUNSELLING CENTRE you can expect to:  Be listened to and heard.  Be supported and not judged.  Better understand what you feel and why.  Learn new ways to face your struggles. WHO DO WE SERVE- Services are available to people of all ages, all ethnic and religious/nonreligious backgrounds, and all social and economic statuses. FAMILY COUNSELLING CENTRE prioritizes youth and their families by offering greater flexibility in session times and subsidies, in an effort to ensure youth are not turned away. We can provide help in the following areas and more...  Conflict Resolution  Couples & Marital Issues  Criminal Justice System Involvement  Crisis Intervention  Divorce & Separation  Family Issues  Domestic violence  Lifestyle Changes  Parenting Issues  Relationship Issues  School Difficulties  Addictions  Vocational Issues COUNSELING FORMATS-In counselling, 'format' refers to the different participants involved in the session (e.g., couple or individual) and the different settings in which it is conducted (e.g., in-person or over the internet). Differences in format may affect the length of the session (e.g., 50 or 80 minutes), and the type of therapy used. A variety of formats are available:  Teen / Pre-Teen Therapy  Family Therapy  Marital / Couples Therapy  Adult Individual Therapy  Group Therapy  Educational Seminars COUNSELING MODELS-Shelter Family Counselling Centre counsellors practice from an integrative approach, in an effort to provide holistic care.
