Can a wedding card come under the ambit of copyright? Whether a work is capable of being registered under the Copyright Act 1957 varies case by case basis. Recently, the Registrar of Copyright rejected an application for copyright registration of a wedding card with the following observations;

"After perusal of the work submitted, it is observed that the work submitted for registration is a mere wedding card of the applicant citing the schedule of the event. The creative spark in the same is utterly lacking or so trivial as to be virtually non-existent so as to constitute copyrightable subject matter"

Such an observation however is not entirely at par with the laws and policies in place. It is well settled that work which is an original creation of an author or an owner fixed in a tangible form, is capable of being entered into the Register of Copyrights, irrespective of the fact that whether such work posses any artistic quality or not.
