Breaking the Silence: Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse

At , our mission is to educate teens about Child Rights, empowering them to protect themselves and others. One of the most difficult yet crucial topics we address in our training is sexual abuse—how to recognize it, protect against it, and report it.

It is heartbreaking to witness the sudden shift in children's expressions—regardless of gender, background, or privilege—when this topic comes up. The sad reality is that many have already experienced some form of abuse but have never spoken about it. The reasons are painfully familiar:
🔹 "No one will believe me."
🔹 "My family will be harmed."
🔹 "It was my fault."

Perpetrators instill fear and guilt in children to silence them. Shockingly, 90% of abusers are people they know—family members, friends, neighbors.

The Rising Numbers: A Call to Action
In 2022, India saw an 8.7% rise in child abuse cases, reaching a staggering 162,000 incidents (NCRB). The COVID-19 lockdowns further exposed the vulnerability of children, leading to a surge in crimes against them. (Source-Fair Planet)

What Can We Do?
We must create safe spaces for children—starting from the moment they learn to walk until they can fully protect themselves. Every adult has a role to play in breaking the silence and ensuring that no child suffers in isolation.
💜 Teach children about body safety from an early age.
💜 Encourage open conversations without fear or shame.
💜 Be a trusted adult they can confide in.
💜 Know and share child helpline numbers (like 1098 in India).
💜 Advocate for stricter laws and better enforcement.

Silence protects the abuser, not the child. Let's work together to build a world where every child feels safe, heard, and empowered.

The Supreme Court of India has rightly reminded the Central & State Governments and their agencies of their responsibility to take care of all children who are vulnerable to any kind of exploitation.

The Covid19 pandemic has pushed more children onto the Streets. As per NCPCR data, over 1 million children are estimated to be homeless and living on the streets, but the Govt. has managed to identify only around 10,000 of them yet!

The Govt. must take immediate action “without any further delay” as these children continue to suffer under poverty and exploitative conditions. Most importantly, the Govt. must provide long-term rehabilitation programmes for these children. The Govt. must mobilize and empower NGOs to bring this initiative to fruition.

Often the authorities launch the programme on a big scale and then everyone sleeps over it. This matter cannot be handled like other issues, because ultimately the sufferers are vulnerable children who are the hope of tomorrow.

THIS IS THE WORLD LEFT BEHIND AFTER THE PANDEMIC. WHAT CAN YOU AND I DO TO CHANGE THIS? DO YOUR BIT.

Child marriage has increased 50 percent and online abuse has increased 400 percent in one year, CRY(Child Rights and You, NGO) said. Further analysis suggests that crimes against children in India has increased steeply by 381 percent in the last decade.

The COVID-19 crisis threatens to further erode global progress against child labour unless urgent mitigation measures are taken and new analysis suggests a further 8.9 million children will be in child labour by the end of 2022 as a result of rising poverty driven by the pandemic, it said.
