One of the most common misconceptions is that any family member can arrive in Portugal as a tourist and apply for family reunification from within the country.
Today, that is no longer true in many cases.
✅ Family reunification is generally based on a family member who already holds legal residence in Portugal.
However, families who could previously regularize their status after arriving in Portugal may now be required to start the process before relocating. This is now the most common scenario for family members seeking residence based on a relative who obtained a Portuguese visa and residence permit.
There are exceptions, particularly in cases involving minor children.
In many situations, these families can include their family members as accompanying applicants in the visa process before moving to Portugal. In other cases, they may need to wait two years after obtaining residence in Portugal before becoming eligible to invite their family members through the family reunification process.
🇪🇺 What about family members of Portuguese and EU citizens?
In many cases, they are subject to a different legal framework than the standard family reunification process. As a general rule, spouses and children of Portuguese citizens and EU citizens are still entitled to enter Portugal as visitors and apply for their residence process from within Portugal.
The key message is:
