Ireland Residence Card based on an EU Citizen Child? Here is the absolute truth you need to know before applying!
If you have been told you can directly apply for an Irish visa under EU Treaty Rights just because your child is an EU national, you might be missing a massive detail. Ireland handles this a bit differently!
Here is the breakdown of how the process actually works:
1️⃣ Apply on Your Own Rights: You cannot apply for a visa under EU Treaty Rights from outside, because the child is legally dependent on you, not the other way around. You must secure your own entry into Ireland first.
2️⃣ Apply for the Residence Card inside Ireland: Once both you and your EU citizen child are physically in Ireland, you can then apply for your Residence Card.
3️⃣ Provide Proof of Residency: The algorithm and immigration look for concrete proof that the child is residing in Ireland. If they are school-aged, you’ll need school enrollment papers. If they are younger, a GP registration letter works perfectly!
4️⃣ Timeline: Processing usually takes around 3 to 6 months (though decisions often arrive around the 4-month mark).
