Garda Training Review Group Report recommends closer relationships with regional and technological universities
The Report of the Garda Training Review group has recommended enhanced links with regional and technological universities to better meet future police training needs but stopped short of recommending a second Garda training college.
Templemore has been the main Garda Training College since 1964, and the Training Review Group recommends that Templemore remains the primary Garda training facility for new recruits. Investment and ongoing development in facilities at Templemore will ensure the Garda College will soon accommodate 1,000 new training recruits every year.

Three distinct faculties are currently in operation within the Templemore campus:

Foundation training for new Garda recruits
Leadership, management & professional development
Crime, specialist & operational skills.

The most incredible legal cock-up story in past 40 Years 👇👇👇
A Birmingham businessman who bought a three-bedroom house from the city council for £395,000 inadvertently acquired a primary school because of a paperwork error, The Daily Mail reports.

Sukhjit Bains, 50, bought the property at auction in 2013, but his solicitor used a TR1 form that transferred all land registered under the same title, rather than a TP1 form covering only the house.

The council’s conveyancer signed the document without spotting the mistake, apparently transferring George Dixon Primary School and its playing fields to Bains’s company, NH Care Ltd.

The error emerged in April 2024 when the school sought academy status and discovered it did not own its own building. Birmingham City Council has now taken the company and Lloyds Bank, its lender, to the High Court to recover the school.

A legal expert described the blunder as “the most incredible legal cock-up I can recall” in 40 years.

A new podcast from the Irish Independent legal affairs editor Shane Phelan talks about an experiment undertaken at the Kilkenny Law Festival where four AI models, Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok were asked to sit as judges of the High Court.
The event which took place in Kilkenny Courthouse on Friday 25 September was overseen by former Supreme Court judge Marie Baker and asked the AI models to rule on a fictional extradition case based on the current Irish legal position.

Mr Phelan took part in the experiment in Kilkenny and in the podcast he talks to Fionnán Sheahan about how each model fared and how the future looks for the use of AI in the legal profession.

Just some of the points expected in todays budget
➡Budget tax cuts to leave couples €1,500 better off as income band rises to €46,500 and credits increase by €125
➡€500 disability payment, rural pub tax rebate in Budget
➡€150 cut to the Student Contribution Fee
➡ cutting student fees by €250
➡ Parents with two children studying at third-level will see their Student Contribution Fee bill cut by up to €1,500.
➡ the amount available for first-time buyers under the Help-to-Buy Scheme is to increase by €5,000 up to €35,000.Help-to-Buy Scheme
➡ The renters credit is expected to increase by €150 for single people and €300 for couples from €1,000 and €2,000 respectively
➡ a proposal to give a voucher to young people to spend on arts, cultural and music venues next year
➡ effective cut of €50 for filling a 900-litre tank of home-heating oil.
➡ The cost of full-time childcare for young children looks set to be cut by at least €1,000 annually per child in the Budget tomorrow with fees capped at €550 a month for children up to senior infants.

Online shopping add-on fees to hit €5
Revenue has confirmed that consumers who shop online will face a new €2 charge per item on goods bought outside the EU from 1 November.

The charge relates to goods purchased online from non-EU countries – including Britain – and shipped to consumers in Ireland and other EU member states.

There are no customs declaration or charges for trade in goods between Ireland and the North, so existing arrangements are unaffected by this change.

This fee is separate from, and in addition to, the €3 customs duty per item that has applied since 1 July this year.

If the online seller passes on the charge to consumers, then they will pay the customs duty and the handling fee in one of two ways:

➡Some websites will be set up to collect the fees at the point of sale. In this case, both charges will be shown, and the total price at checkout will be the final price, with no extra charges on delivery, and
➡Other websites may not collect these charges at checkout, in which case the delivery company will require payment before the goods can be delivered.

And finally… Stockholm syndrome
Swedish police have launched a campaign urging people to stop being so polite to suspected scammers.

Fraud cost Sweden 5.7 billion SEK, around £434 million (€506 million), with older people among the most common targets.

The campaign features four Swedish celebrities, including 74-year-old Suzanne Reuter, who said people of her generation were often taught to be polite and accommodating, but scammers exploit those traits.

Most scams targeting people over 60 begin with text messages impersonating authorities, banks or companies before victims are persuaded to call a number. Fraudsters then use prepared scripts to create trust, stress and urgency.

Police urged people to hang up if they become suspicious.

National operations leader Robert Öhman said officers would never collect valuables for safekeeping, and urged people to shut the door on anyone making such a request.
