π¨ Audit Finds Unnecessary Hip Surgeries in Irish Hospitals π¨
An independent audit has found that many children underwent unjustified hip surgeries (pelvic osteotomies) for developmental dysplasia of the hip between 2021β2023.
π Key Findings:
Temple Street: 60% of surgeries not clinically justified
Cappagh Hospital: 79% not justified
497 patients to be recalled
1,800+ cases under review since 2010
β οΈ Risks: Pain, mobility issues, further surgeries, early arthritis
π Concerns also raised about lack of informed consent for experimental procedures.
