Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission

Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission is a campaign by the Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission. It is also Ireland’s national equality body. Higgins.

The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission is Ireland’s national human rights institution and is recognised as such by the United Nations. As an independent public body, we are directly accountable to the Oireachtas. We have a statutory remit set out under the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Act 2014 to protect and promote human rights and equality in Ireland, and build a culture of

respect for human rights, equality and intercultural understanding in the State. Our work is determined independently by the fifteen members of the Commission who were appointed by our Head of State, President Michael D. The diverse membership of the Commission broadly reflects the nature of Irish society.

Ireland’s human rights record is set to be examined later this year (10th November) by the UN Human Rights Council. Today, we have invited civil society to our offices for a capacity building event. Speaking at the event Deirdre Malone, IHREC Director welcomed attendees “Never has this work been more essential both at home and globally. National Human Rights Organisations are now a crucial bulwark against the erosion of human rights, the backsliding of democracy and the creeping destruction of the rule of law in many countries worldwide. We must take every opportunity and use every tool at our disposal in our defence and promotion of human rights and equality.”

On , we were delighted to travel to Limerick to meet with local community groups and civil society to talk about structural poverty. Our Commission members heard from local experts who spoke about the issues affecting people in Limerick, and broke into groups to come up with ideas for building strategies for change. With massive thanks to Southill Hub Community Centre for hosting the workshop and our Commission meeting.
