“Not every medical complication or unsuccessful treatment outcome amounts to negligence.”

Medical negligence claims in Ireland are assessed against a legal framework known as the Dunne Principles, which continue to shape how Irish courts evaluate standards of medical care and professional accountability.

Understanding these principles is important for anyone with concerns about medical treatment, as a poor medical outcome alone does not automatically amount to negligence. The courts instead assess whether the care provided fell below the standard expected of a reasonably competent healthcare professional.

The Dunne Principles also play a central role in determining how expert medical evidence is considered and how standards of care are assessed in medical negligence claims across Ireland.

If you have concerns about the care you or a loved one received, understanding your legal position is an important first step.

You spend a lifetime building wealth, property, and businesses for your family. Without proper succession planning, a significant portion of that legacy could be lost to tax.

In Ireland, inheritance above certain thresholds may be subject to Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) at 33%. For many families, the challenge is not the value of the assets being inherited, but having the liquidity available to cover the tax liability. In some cases, this can place pressure on families to sell property, investments, or business assets to meet Revenue obligations.

This article explores the risks families often overlook and the legal and financial strategies available to help protect wealth for the next generation.

“How much is my claim worth?”

It’s often the first question asked after an accident, but there’s rarely a simple answer.

In this conversation, Anna Muzyka and Cliodhna Finnin explain the key factors that influence the value of a claim, and why two people with similar injuries can receive very different outcomes.

They discuss the importance of medical evidence, how claims are assessed in Ireland, and some of the most common misconceptions surrounding compensation cases.

A clear, practical discussion designed to help make an unfamiliar process feel more understandable.

On Saturday morning, members of the HOMS Assist team joined the Darkness Into Light walk in Limerick City in support of Pieta and everyone impacted by su***de and self-harm.

A forever important reminder of how much it matters to check in with the people around us, even when someone may appear to be doing okay.

Walking together as the city moved from darkness into daylight reflected the hope and support that Darkness Into Light stands for each year, giving us an opportunity to remember those we won't forget. 💛

If your symptoms don’t appear straight away after an accident, it doesn’t automatically mean you’re out of time to take action. ⏳

Under Irish law, the two-year time limit for a claim generally begins from your date of knowledge: the point at which you become aware of your injury and its link to the accident.

This is often relevant in cases like delayed whiplash, where symptoms can take time to develop.

What matters is what you do next. Seeking medical attention as soon as symptoms appear creates a clear record, helping to establish that connection and support your claim through the Injuries Board process.

At some point, many people find themselves needing to have a difficult conversation with their parents about the future.

Not just about money, but about care, planning, and what happens if circumstances change.

It can feel easier to avoid these conversations. But without them, families can be left trying to make important decisions without clear guidance at an already challenging time.

Understanding what is in place, what matters most to your parents, and what may need to be considered can make a real difference.

Planning ahead is not about focusing on the worst case. It is about making sure decisions can be made with confidence when they are needed.

If you need guidance on how to begin planning for your parents’ future, or support with wills, trusts, or an Enduring Power of Attorney, our team is here to help.

When is a delay more than just an oversight?

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

Many early symptoms are often explained away as lifestyle factors. Stress, caffeine, food intolerances or IBS.

In many cases, that explanation is reasonable. But when symptoms persist, change, or don’t quite resolve, they should be looked at more closely.

In Ireland, around 2,500 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year. Early detection plays a significant role in outcomes, and timely investigation can make a real difference.

Not every delay will amount to negligence. The key question is whether those symptoms were properly followed up. Would a competent medical professional have taken further steps, such as arranging tests or making a referral?

Awareness matters, not just in recognising symptoms, but in understanding what should happen when those concerns are raised.

A wet but very rewarding Sunday yesterday at the Dooneen10mile made a little sweeter with a few well-earned 99s 🍦

A big thank you to Limerick Racecourse for hosting, and to all the runners, volunteers, and clubs who came out and made it happen.

Huge credit to Dooneen Ac for organising such a strong event 🏃🏼‍♂️
