Immigration does conduct random checks of foreignersโ documents. Some tourists believe this is just a rumourโbut it is true and it is an important part of protecting this Island.
๐ฎโโ๏ธ ๐ช๐ต๐ผ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐?
Immigration has dedicated teams patrolling tourist areas. Friendly officers usually wear navy (polo shirts) or black uniforms, often with black โImmigrationโ tactical vests, sometimes branded caps, and some will have body cameras. You may also see officers in white shirts, but the tactical vests make it clear who they are.
They are usually in groups of up to 5 people, although generally only 1โ2 officers will approach tourists at a time.

โข ๐ You will be asked to show your passport. Under Indonesian Immigration Law No. 6 of 2011, you are required to show your passport and stay permit when requested by Immigration officers or police.
โข ๐ฑ You may be asked to show your original passport, however many officers will often accept a clear photo of your passport data page on your phone.
โข ๐ You will also be asked to show your stay permit. Many people assume this is the same as their visa, but it is not (see our previous post on this).
๐ก๐ผ๐๐ฒ: If officers request the original passport, it is usually to check your entry stamp and permitted stay period. With the introduction of e-gates, stamps are becoming less common, but if you received a stamp and cannot show your stay permit, it may be required to confirm your length of stay.

๐ก๐ผ๐๐ฒ: ๐ฐ They are not there to ask for money. There is no on-the-spot fine for not having your documents with you.
If officers ask to see your documents and you are not carrying them, and you are a genuine tourist with nothing to hide, this is usually a straightforward interaction with some simple questions. You may simply be reminded to carry your documents next time.

Some tourists say itโs unreasonable to be asked for documents while at the beach. From an enforcement point of view, the law still applies. Arguing this point is not the best approach.
Officers may walk away to avoid a sceneโbut the system doesnโt forget. The airport is where it can catch up with you โ๏ธ
