Neil McCormick will host our Future-Proof Your Estate seminar on 17 September.

He'll walk through three areas that most estate plans overlook until it's too late:

1. How assets are distributed without a Will in place.

2. How Wills, Trusts, Life Insurance and Lasting Power of Attorney work together as a safety net.

3. How business owners can plan for succession and key-person risk.

Two sessions on the day — 12:30 PM and 6:30 PM HKT.

A Qualifying Non-UK Pension Scheme (QNUPS) is an offshore pension arrangement used in cross-border planning. Its primary estate planning advantages include bypassing probate, shielding wealth from UK inheritance tax (for eligible non-residents), and allowing high-value or alternative asset contributions without standard pension caps.

UK property is a "situs asset" — it stays inside the UK tax net regardless of who owns it or where they live. The offshore company structure many HK landlords rely on doesn't change that.

So what actually works? Our latest article discusses the two-part structure that does hold up.

Do you know which side of the 10-year rule you're on?

Under 10 years of UK residence, only your UK property is exposed to UK inheritance tax. Cross that line, and it's your entire worldwide estate — plus a 10-year tail that follows you even after you move back to Hong Kong.

Understanding where you stand could make a significant difference to your long-term estate planning.

The UK’s inheritance tax system underwent its most significant reform in decades when the domicile and deemed‑domicile rules were abolished from 6 April 2025 and replaced with a new, strictly residence‑based framework.

This shift has introduced a new and important concept for internationally mobile individuals: the IHT tail period — the window of time after leaving the UK during which a person may still be subject to UK IHT on their UK and worldwide estate.

Understanding the tail is critical to managing global estate exposure under the 2026 rules.

You’ve built your wealth. Now it’s time to protect it and pass it on wisely.

Since the domicile rules were replaced, UK inheritance tax now hinges on Long-Term Residence status, not simply where you live today. From April 2027, most UK pensions will be included in the IHT net for the first time. For UK expats in Hong Kong, that's two significant changes landing at once.

Join our UK Property & Tax Seminar on Thursday, 20 August 2026, at 12:30 PM & 6:30 PM (HKT) to understand exactly where you stand and what a tax-efficient estate plan looks like for your situation.

10/08/2026

Hong Kong’s large British and international communities, along with HNW families holding UK property, pensions, or investment portfolios, have long relied on non-domiciled status to shield foreign income and gains from UK tax.

That system no longer exists.

If you're a UK national living in Hong Kong or thinking about heading back, the way your property, pensions, and investments are taxed has shifted. It's worth understanding before you make any big decisions.

Following HMRC’s legislative changes, which take effect in April 2027, traditional UK pensions will incur a 40% IHT charge upon death.

However, under the updated framework, qualifying individuals who are not long-term UK (non-LTR) residents will not be charged Inheritance Tax on pensions that are not established in the UK, such as QNUPS.
