[Inspiring Future Legal Minds: Hong Kong and Shenzhen Students Explore Passions in the Legal Field]
The Law Society of Hong Kong organised “Teen Talk” 2024 GBA Study Tour on 6 and 7 July 2024, bringing together 60 outstanding students from Hong Kong’s international and local schools with 20 international school students from Shenzhen for a unique learning and exchange experience entirely in English. We recently interviewed two of the participants, both of who are aspiring to study law at university.
Katelyn Yiu, a S4 student from Diocesan Girls’ School of Hong Kong, was still filled with excitement as she reflected on the two-day one-night Study Tour. “The entire itinerary was rich and fascinating, with the once-in-a-lifetime visit to the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration standing out as most special. The opportunity to witness a real arbitration room was truly rare. Additionally, the visit to the Qianhai Cooperation Zone People’s Court (which applies Hong Kong common law in certain contract dispute cases), watching other participants’ presentations, and experiencing drone-delivered takeaways from Meituan all left a deep impression on me.”
Katelyn was awarded the “Best Speaker” at the Study Tour’s Presentation Competition. She remarked, “The presentation topic was quite challenging. Without the contributions and outstanding performance of my teammates, I wouldn’t have advanced in the finals, let alone received this honour. I’m deeply grateful for that.” She gained valuable insights into the legal systems of the Greater Bay Area through preparing for the competition, responding to adjudicators’ spontaneous questions, and exchanging views with other participants.
Sharon Xu, a S4 student from The King’s School Shenzhen International, also found the itinerary enriching, with the visit to Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration being particular memorable. Through visits to different legal institutions in Shenzhen and the stimulating discussions during the Presentation Competition, she benefited greatly ---- not only having enhanced her legal knowledge but also honed her critical thinking and public speaking skills.
Participating in this Study Tour gave Sharon a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s rule of law and the legal system in the Mainland. She shared, “Both legal systems have their own strengths. By working together in the GBA, we can gain more opportunities and benefits from these two systems.”
The Law Society will continue to promote youth legal education through initiatives like “Teen Talk”, helping young people explore their interests in the legal field.
