Event Recap: Navigating Succession Law at HKEX

Our Joint Managing Partner, Nathan Wong, was invited to deliver a bespoke seminar on Hong Kong Succession Law to the team at Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX).

This exclusive training session was seamlessly facilitated by our Matrimonial Partner, Elaine Sum, reflecting Haldanes‘ cross-departmental commitment to delivering tailored legal insights to Hong Kong’s leading institutions.
Estate disputes can be complex and emotionally charged.

Nathan’s session focused on the proactive prevention and resolution of such conflicts, covering:
• Wills & Probate: Avoiding common ex*****on pitfalls.
• Enduring Powers of Attorney & Advance Directives: Planning for the future.
• Contentious Scenarios: Navigating challenges to will validity.

By examining real-world scenarios, attendees gained practical insights into the legal requirements and strategic steps necessary to manoeuvre through sensitive estate matters.

At Haldanes, our Private Client team provides comprehensive support across the full spectrum of succession law—from complex litigation to bespoke estate administration. We would like to thank HKEX for the invitation and look forward to further opportunities to share our legal insights on estate planning and wealth preservation.

Nathan Wong, our Joint Managing Partner, spoke at the The Hong Kong Retirement Schemes Association (HKRSA) HR Roundtable Workgroup Meeting, sharing legal insights on cross-border retirement planning. Qualified as a Hong Kong solicitor and Greater Bay Area Lawyer, he provided human resources professionals with practical guidance on navigating succession, marriage, and property planning in the Mainland and the Greater Bay Area.

We are grateful to the HKRSA for organising the event and having Nathan join this important conversation on wealth protection and cross-border inheritance.

Earlier today, our William Ahern (Bill) hosted a CPD seminar on the "Rule of Law". The seminar covered a range of topics, including the definition of the “rule of law”, indicators of its presence or absence, statutory recognition, historical development, international aspects, and how different jurisdictions approach the concept.

Bill brought a wealth of experience to the session. Admitted in Brisbane in 1980, he spent years specialising in tax planning and tax litigation before acquiring the only legal practice on Norfolk Island.
Our thanks to Bill for taking the time to share his insights with us. We look forward to future sessions that help deepen our understanding of foundational legal principles.

✨Making a difference beyond the courtroom.

At Haldanes, we believe that legal knowledge can be a powerful tool for change — especially when it reaches those who need it most.

Our Associate, Joanne Lam, recently gave her time and expertise to two youth outreach events in Hong Kong — first at Buddhist Yip Kei Nam Memorial College (Project GATES 2026) in April, and at CNEC Christian College (「法」現新生活分享會) in Shek Lei this May. In both sessions, she spoke to students and parents about the real-life consequences of drugs, the importance of knowing your legal rights, and how one wrong choice can change a life.

Joanne’s dedication to pro bono work reflects who we are as a firm:
👉 Using law not just to defend, but to educate and prevent.

A huge thank you to the schools and organisations that made these sessions possible — and to Joanne for leading with purpose. 💪

🧠 Common law v.s Civil law jurisdictions: Do criminal lawyers' brains work differently? And how do we sync up in cross-border criminal trials?

Our partner Felix Ng (Secretary, IBA Business Crime Committee) joins an all-star global panel in Athens to break it down:

📌 Adversarial v. inquisitorial trials
📌 Viva voce evidence v. dossier de procédure
📌 Cross-examination & Brown v Dunn rule
📌 Witness preparation
📌 Expert evidence
📌 Defence strategies

Come join us for the debate, leave with a sharper global lens.

We had the honour to hear from the Plowman Chambers team for a focused CPD session on “Review of Market Misconduct”, moderated by our Partner, Jonathan Midgley.

Attendees gained practical insights into the six key market misconduct offences under the Securities and Futures Ordinance, supported by recent case examples. The session also explored the interaction between Market Misconduct Tribunal (MMT) proceedings and civil actions, including the scope of s.213 SFO jurisdiction, followed by lively Q&A.

A big thank you to the Plowman Chambers team for generously sharing their expertise and making the session both insightful and highly practical.

Haldanes’ Partner and Head of Antitrust and Competition Law, Felix Ng, was recently interviewed by the South China Morning Post regarding the potential merger between Hong Kong’s two largest supermarket giants, Wellcome and ParknShop.

The reported negotiations between Jardine Matheson and CK Hutchison Holdings have sparked significant discussion regarding market dominance in the grocery sector. While some internal assessments suggest a combined market share of less than 50%, other local figures indicate the merged entity could control up to 80% of the sector, raising questions about future pricing and competition.

Felix noted that Hong Kong’s merger rules currently apply only to the telecommunications sector, adding that a monopoly is not inherently unlawful without an abuse of market power. He clarified that the Competition Commission assesses dominance through various factors—such as pricing power and entry barriers—rather than a fixed market share threshold.

As a leading practitioner in white-collar crime and competition law, Felix Ng heads a department renowned for its deep expertise in handling Competition Commission inquiries and Tribunal proceedings.
