Housing market better than expected as buyers return

A better than expected housing market has surprised many as buyers return, reports Rightmove in its latest House Price Index (February 2023).

It says that increasing numbers of buyers are returning, with the market starting 2023 much better than expected.

The latest look at buyer demand shows the number of people getting in touch with agents is up by 11% in the last two weeks against the same period in 2019’s more normal market.

They are asking for help with donations of warm clothes which are desperately needed by families and soldiers on the front line, and are fundraising to cover the costs of the trip.

Five-year fixed mortgage rates in UK drop below 6%

The average five-year fixed mortgage rate is below 6% for the first time in seven weeks, according to latest data from Moneyfacts.

Moneyfacts reports that the typical five-year fixed mortgage deal now costs 5.95% per year, the lowest in seven weeks.

Some mortgage brokers are forecasting that five-year fixed mortgage rates will fall back to below 4% in the New Year.

Mortgage lenders cut interest rates despite Bank of England rise

“Lenders are repricing all the time and it looks like most rates will come down a touch,” said James Kear, Preston Baker’s Head of Financial Services.

“So far just today I’ve already seen messages from six major lenders about reduced rates coming through over the next 48 hours.”

With mortgage rates so liquid at the moment and the economy in a state of flux, it’s important to talk to a mortgage broker before making any decisions about your mortgage – that’s the advice of Preston Baker Mortgage and Protection Specialist Michael Johnson.

“Rates are moving so quickly and by talking to a mortgage broker you can get a view of the whole market and get the right mortgage solution for your needs,” says Michael.

House prices rise to new record high in October – Rightmove

The average price of property coming to the market rises by 0.9% (+£3,398) in October to a new record of £371,158, reports Rightmove today, Monday October 17th.

In its latest House Price Index report Rightmove says that shortage of property for sale continues to underpin prices.

Rightmove’s Director of Property Science Tim Bannister says that with uncertainty over where mortgage interest rates will go, those who can still afford to proceed may decide that waiting too long could come at an even higher cost than taking action to move now, especially if the level of demand continues to outstrip supply and supports prices.
