ON THIS DAY – THE GREAT STORM OF 1987!

On 15 October 1987, Britain was battered by one of the most infamous storms in its history.

It’s remembered well because of BBC weatherman Michael Fish and his now legendary weather forecast

“Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way. Well, if you’re watching, don’t worry, there isn’t.”

His words became part of British TV history as hurricane-force winds caused widespread devastation overnight!

A total of 18 people were killed, around 15 million trees blown down and damage of £1 billion was estimated at the time!

AFCS stands for the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.

It is a UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) scheme that provides compensation to serving and former members of the British Armed Forces who suffer an injury, illness or medical condition caused by service on or after 6 April 2005.

How does AFCS work?
Who can claim? Regular and reserve personnel, and certain former service personnel, subject to the scheme's eligibility rules.

What can you claim for? Service-related injuries and illnesses, including hearing loss and tinnitus caused by military noise exposure.

What compensation is available? A lump-sum payment based on the severity of the injury or condition. Some more serious cases may also qualify for a Guaranteed Income Payment (GIP).

Who handles claims? The MOD administers the scheme through Veterans UK.

On 14 October 1066, William the Conqueror defeated King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, changing English history forever!

Nearly 1,000 years later, the number 1066 is still making its mark — appearing in the phone number of Hastings Direct!

Coincidence? Or a clever nod to one of the most famous dates in British history?

WERE YOU IN THE RAF?

Years of exposure to aircraft engines, jet noise and loud machinery could have affected your hearing.

If you served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and now suffer from hearing loss or tinnitus, you may be entitled to compensation.
What causes hearing loss in RAF personnel?

Some of the most common causes of hearing loss in RAF personnel are:
• Aircraft engines
• Excessive noise during active service
• Noisy environments with inadequate ear protection

Serving in the armed forces often means being exposed to working in loud environments. While many personnel become accustomed to excessive noise over time, prolonged exposure without proper safety measures can have serious consequences.
Experiencing this kind of hearing loss can be deeply distressing, but those affected may find reassurance in knowing they could be eligible for compensation through a military hearing loss claim. At PR Scully & Co, we have been pursuing claims for injured clients for over 25 years now and we always put our clients front and centre.
Hearing loss is, unfortunately, a common issue among military personnel, particularly for those who have served on the front lines. An estimated 300,000 veterans in the UK are living with hearing loss, with many more affected service members unaccounted for in these figures.
