How to stay compliant with aftermarket light products: vulnerable road user signs, decorative lights, and warning beacons... 🚨

Many drivers add aftermarket devices to their vehicles to help protect cyclists and pedestrians. However, the vehicle still needs to meet legal requirements, or the driver could face enforcement action.

DVSA has seen an increase in vehicles using non‑compliant or illegal lighting, including some VRU signs, decorative lights, and blue warning beacons.

To stay compliant, drivers must follow certain rules when fitting these devices. This is not a full list, but it covers the main requirements.

They should:

- Fit devices only to the sides and rear of the vehicle

- Avoid placing them on side guard rails or rear underrun devices

- Make sure the devices do not increase the vehicle’s maximum allowed width

- Ensure nothing sticks out in a way that could endanger cyclists, pedestrians, or other road users

- Use non‑reflective materials
