"If we'd had Citation prior to this incident, we wouldn't have had anything to worry about. In the end, we had a lot to worry about."

That's from someone who learned the hard way what happens when HR support isn't in place from the start.

Since working with Citation, Lunya has handled a performance concern without going straight to disciplinary, rolled out training across every level of their team, and given them visibility of who's completed what, all in one place.

His advice to anyone on the fence?

"Don't wait until you get stung."

It's a bit like fitting a burglar alarm after the break-in. You want to be protected from the beginning — not after something's gone wrong.

Employees only need six months' service to bring an unfair dismissal claim from 1 January 2027. And the compensation cap will be removed.

Is your probation process ready?

If you still use six-month probation periods, you’re at risk. All it takes is a delayed review meeting, a period of sickness absence, or a notice period to push a dismissal past the new threshold.

Join Flora Neville’s webinar on Monday 4 August at 10am covering:

✅ What the unfair dismissal changes mean and when they apply
✅ Why six-month probations are now higher risk
✅ How to structure probation periods under the new rules
✅ The five probation mistakes most likely to result in a claim
✅ How to handle extensions without increasing your legal risk

Do you get the hierarchy of controls wrong?

We see it often:
Identify a risk → reach for PPE.

And while that feels like action, it’s the weakest control you have.
→ Your goal isn’t to manage risk.
→ Your goal is to remove it where possible.

The simple way to think about the hierarchy:

1️⃣ Eliminate – remove the hazard completely
2️⃣ Substitute – replace it with something safer
3️⃣ Engineering controls – isolate people from the hazard
4️⃣ Administrative controls – change how the work is done
5️⃣ PPE – protect the individual with equipment

The higher up you go, the more effective and reliable the control – because you’re not relying on people to “do the right thing” every time.

When a new hazard appears, what’s the first control you reach for?

What happens if employees don't follow reporting procedures?

These are some of the most common questions we've received since the Employment Rights Act 2025 reforms came into effect.
Join Flora Neville on Tuesday 30 June for a practical webinar covering:

✅ The new SSP rules and employee eligibility
✅ Day-one SSP and the removal of waiting days

With parts of the UK under amber heat alerts this week, one question keeps coming up.

"What's the maximum temperature employees can legally work in?"

There isn't one. There's a legal minimum but there's no upper limit.

That doesn't mean temperature stops being a Health & Safety issue. If the heat is affecting your team's ability to work safely, it's on you to act.

A few practical steps worth taking right now:

→ Make sure everyone has access to drinking water
→ Check if you can reduce heat or improve ventilation in working areas
→ Consider flexing start and finish times to avoid the hottest part of the day
→ Ease up on formal dress codes where it's safe to do so

Simple stuff. But worth doing before someone has to ask.
