📦 We’re attending the SSA UK Level Up Conference 2026

We’re looking forward to joining the self-storage community at the SSA UK Level Up Conference on 29–30 April at the Telford International Centre.

It’s a great opportunity to connect with operators, investors, and suppliers from across the sector, and be part of the conversations shaping what’s next for self storage.

👋 Iain McGleish and Morgan James will be there — if you’re attending, they’d love to chat about the challenges and opportunities across the sector.

Every UK employer must conduct risk assessments. But if you're unclear on what that actually means or how to do it properly, you're not alone.

The process breaks down into five clear steps:

1️⃣ Identify the hazards in your workplace
2️⃣ Decide who might be harmed and how
3️⃣ Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions
4️⃣ Record your findings and implement controls
5️⃣ Review and update regularly

The key question at each stage: what's reasonably practicable? That doesn't mean eliminating every possible risk – it means taking sensible, proportionate precautions based on the likelihood and severity of harm.

Remember: a risk assessment isn't a one-time task. It's a living document that should evolve with your workplace.

You should review them:

→ When processes change
→ When incidents occur
→ When legislation updates
→ When new people start or change roles
→ At minimum annually

The goal isn't to create perfect paperwork. It's to create a safer workplace. Can you eliminate hazards entirely? Great – do it. If not, reduce the risk as far as reasonably practicable and put controls in place.

Need support conducting risk assessments for your business? Citation's Health & Safety consultants work with thousands of UK employers to get this right.

🎙️ “The first rule of being a Health & Safety professional is not to tell people you’re a Health & Safety professional…”

Our new podcast 'Not another safety talk' is here.

It breaks down the barriers around Health & Safety, and challenges the idea that it’s all rules, red tape, and ruining the fun.

In episode one, the Simon and David get into:

→ Why Health & Safety has a bad reputation
→ The real purpose behind it
→ Key topics for businesses this year (👋 AI)
→ Why they rarely mention their job title

Basically, as the team put it – “We’re not the anti-fun police.”

But we’ll let you be the judge of that.

Stress doesn’t usually show up in a risk assessment. But in most businesses, it probably should.

In Great Britain last year, the HSE found:
• 964,000 workers experienced work-related stress, depression or anxiety
• 1.9 million people were dealing with a work-related illness.

So it’s no surprise there’s a big focus on wellbeing during Stress Awareness Month.

Where do things often break down is:
HR deals with the impact
→ absence, burnout, people struggling
Health & Safety should be looking at the cause
→ workload, pressure, unclear roles, long hours

If you focus on impact, you’re always reacting.
The shift comes from stepping back and asking:
• Where’s the pressure coming from?
• Who’s most affected?
• What can we change in the job itself?

That’s what a stress risk assessment is for.

It’s one practical thing you can review this month – and here’s a simple template and guidance to start off -> https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0twZc30

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) looks at more than just your paperwork.

During inspections, they also assess premises, equipment, and personnel. So, when it comes to putting Health & Safety into practice, nailing down the basics is essential.

We’re talking:

🦺 Regular equipment checks and maintenance scheduling
🦺 Staff training kept up to date
🦺 Accessible policies and clear documentation
🦺 Having the correct PPE for each task

When HSE comes knocking, make sure you’re confident in your processes. At Citation, we’re here to help, with expert advice and support whenever you need.

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is changing.
From 6 April 2026, you need to make sure you're ready

SSP is getting a big overhaul with the Employment Rights Act. There's a real business impact around managing absences.

Here’s what’s changing:
1. Day-one entitlement
SSP will be payable from the day one of sickness absence, removing the current three-day ‘waiting period’.
2. Wider eligibility
The Lower Earnings Limit is removed. This opens up SSP to all employees, no matter their weekly earnings.
3. Support for lower earners
SSP will be paid at 80% of average weekly earnings or the statutory rate — whichever's lower.

Three steps to take now:
✅ Have a clear absence policy
Make sure it clearly covers reporting sickness, self-certification, return-to-work interviews, and steps to follow if absence becomes a concern.

✅ Train your managers on the policy
Managers should know how to run return-to-work conversations, what questions to ask, how to document absence, and when to escalate issues.

✅ Apply your policy consistently
Inconsistent processes can create legal risk. Make sure your absence policy is followed fairly and consistently across the business.

Day-one SSP is coming. Is your absence management process ready? 👇
